I need to replace a defunct Simpson Lawrence Sprint 1000 windlass on a Sealine S37. Has anyone used a Lofrans X1 700w 8mm gypsy to do this? If so was it a straight forward switch over with wiring ETC? and is the X1 Chromed Brass version any good?

A few years ago now I bought a new SL windlass from this guy. He bought up all the SL stock I believe.
I hope he is still around

Thanks David,
I did find him on the net but just the motor and gearbox is nearly twice the price of a new Lofrans X1 and it would leave the rest of the Windlass 23 years old.
My thinking being, if the Lofrans is any good I would hopefully be waving goodbye to any issues for the next few years, and at half the price of fixing the old one.

Doubt you will find any windlass that is a direct replacement. The overall footprint may be similar but bolt spacings are unlikely to be the same. The X1 has a horizontal motor whereas the SL is vertical so you need check you have space for the horizontal motor under the deck. Suggest whatever you choose (Lewmar have a similar range to Lofrans) you specify a 1000W motor.

Hi, Thanks for that. The only reason I went for the 800w was it states a 70 amp breaker, which is the same as the breaker that is in now. Did the Sprint 1000 have a 1000w motor? from what I can find it only had 600w.

I’m in the very same situation. I had a sprint 1000 on my Broom 35 that’s now 24 years old and the price of spares was crazy compared to a new windlass .
I went for the Lofrans x2 800w and that allows me to use the existing wiring and 70amp breaker . I felt that the 800w motor would be fine as the SL was rated at 500w and according to the specs on the Lofrans website it’s stronger in every aspect and the size is fine for my anchor and chain weight .
With the x1 the maximum deck thickness is only 30mm which is the thickness of my deck but I plan on reinforcing it and it will end up being 36mm .The x2 can be fitted to a 40mm deck .
I’m only in the process of installing it . The mounting holes are completely different , the SL had one large odd shaped hole and four bolt holes , the Lofrans is just 2 60mm holes and 5 holes for bolts and wiring .
When I removed the windlass I filled the old hole with layers of G10 board cut to shape and epoxy .I then got a piece of 2mm stainless steel sheet cut to cover the deck where the old holes where . I need to clean up where I filled in and I will stick down the steel sheet .

The S37 was a bit light on the anchor. I notice on the later S38 they went the next size up. Of course with the Sealine “nose” you can’t fit a bigger anchor. All that being said the S37 SL windlass fitted was very capable of lifting the ground gear supplied with never a thought of needing a stronger motor.

Thanks Fred,

I knew if I hung around long enough I would find someone who had done it.
Looks like I just need to measure the deck.
Was there any other reason for going for the X2 over the X1, other than deck thickness?

All Sealines tended to be light on ground gear. My F43 was originally fitted with I think a 10kg anchor. Previous owner had fitted a bigger one but it no longer fitted in the nose properly.

The x2 is a stronger winch . I got the chromed brass with the drum and it's 23kg as apposed to 14kg for the x1. When you compare the specs of the 800w versions the x2 has a higher max pull and working load . My boat size is at the upper end for the x1 but at the lower end for the x2 and for the difference in price I felt it was worth going extra .
I got it on special offer from Cactus nav about a month ago and got a good deal on it , they had it in stock at £890 . I think the difference between it and the x1 was about £120 .
