i have a royal hand windlass and have a problem when i come to release the anchor, when i try to release itw will recover untill it jams and the it disengages. Is this right? Its no problem when it is released for the bow roller as it will jam then disengage, the probem is when i stop it on the descent it then the chain needs securing to overcome the release clutch.
any help please greatly appreciated.

I am not sure if it is the same problem, but I have found that you need to keep the chain gypsy well greased otherwise it will seize. You have to take the two clutch cones and both sides of the gypsy right off, and to do that you have to remove one of the three 8mm bolts that gets in the way. I find that you have to do this fairly frequently – at least once or twice a season. Once the whole mechanism jammed up so that I couldn’t move the handle – I just kept trying to move the handle backwards and forwards, using fairly firm pressure, and it eventually freed. I think they benefit from regular use.

The Royal is a pretty basic and simple piece of kit (I've had two) and as I understand it is pretty much maintenance free. I have never encountered the difficulty described and I would think that the problem is a bit more deep seated than the clutch assembly, pointing towards serious corrosion within the works. I would suggest an email to Lofrans for an answer.

it works perfectly except the release, it will realease but the chain needs to be secure then no problem, the mechanism is good it seems with no stiffness at all. Regreased the clutch but still the same problem. Its a geat windlass and no power needed at all, that suits me at the moment. Think I'll give Lofrans a ring as advised Sam. thanks. Hve you ever had it apart RMA?

I have never had mine apart, although I recall seeing a thread on here (I think) from someone who had. It seemed fairly complicated, enough to put me off.
