I think I lost the magnet on the Ali spool -Anybody else had this ?

The reader display @ the helm says " no sensor detected " or words to that effect from memory .
Googling around - there should be a magnet attached to the spool ?
If that's correct -where do you buy a replacement magnet ,and does N or S matter ?
At the bottom of the pic - On the Ali spool out of shot is rusty hole 4-5 mm dia .
( btw I have sanded and waxoiled the motor body )

not the best pics!

before figuring out if a magnet is missing, you really got to find the sensor! Then you spot a possible hole where the magnet fits and then we are talking.
Now, this is an odd installation, is it a vertical windlass installed horizontally, or am I drunk?
Search for a thin (3-4mm dia) usually grey cable leaving the windlass and going back, the end of it is maybe 4-5mm dia, 30-40mm long ss ending secured somehow to the windlass body. Up to 10mm from it should have the gypsy or alloy drum rotating with the magnet in a hole.
Sorry dimensions are approximate I'm at home and sensor is at the boat to be fitted (but was checking it out last week)

cheers

doh, not drunk but definitely need some sleep...

Sorry for previous post, so sensor seems fine it's at the bottom of the pic on this angled black plastic pipe!
I'm pretty sure any magnet from a window or door alarm sensor set should do. The sensor magnet kit is north of 30euro iirc, not worth it.
Get a door alarm sensor from a local hardware shop, cut the white plastic and epoxy the magnet in the hole. If magnet from the alarm is wider in dia, check that it works by passing it over near the sensor and checking the display. If all's fine, get the right drillbit, and enlarge the hole on the ally piece.
BTW, seems that the sensor is too close to the ally!

cheers

Thanks Vas ,I'll get a small magnet to test as you sugest
There's a about 5-10mm gap between the sensor and Ally wheel ( poor pic angle )

The whole thing sits in a massive locker i can get two blokes standing up in it .It's all concealed out of sight when the lid is shut -Itama styling ?
There is also a chain wash which works -but it pumps sea water -I've traced the seacock + pump ,I would have thought it would be fresh water -not quite sure what what the piont of this is ?-Unless it's to blast weed off -dunno??

yep, check it first then just epoxy it well and it should last. It's not like the forces when retrieving or releasing the anchor are such that the magnet orbits out to space...
Mind, if you're lucky you could throw out all the chain and find the magnet stuck in some mud at the bottom of the locker (unless it's washed out to the sea. Doubt it's worth doing unless you are planning to clean the locker anyway and check the chain.

IIRC there was a discussion between the usuals (JFM, MM, Bart) on the advantages of fresh water chain wash. TBH, don't remember the outcome but the mud/weed blasting properties is not that much related to salinity of the water but pressure. I'm sure they'll pick that up and report ;)
Unless you have massive fresh water tank and/or watermaker, I doubt it's worth converting the system to freshwater.

cheers
