I recommend wrapping the motor in Denso tape. Seems strange that they supply a carbon steel casing on something that will have seawater pouring over it. Denso provides superb corrosion resistance, even subsea. It is horrible sticky stuff so I wrap mine in polythene and Duck tape to make it handleable.

I took mine off yesterday to change oil, still corrosion free after 14 years.

Noted for the next time it's off for an oil change. I find it stupid that the whole windlass has to be removed to change the oil! In the meantime I have wiped it over with ACF50 hoping it will give it some protection.

Thanks for this thread and update. I’m replacing my 1000w cayman motor in feb so if it doesn’t work after I’ve wired it in I can follow all the advice here as a troubleshooting guide

The only thing I would add at the moment is order a new gasket while you're at it. I managed to reuse the existing gasket but I would replace it if I was taking the cover off again.

I tore my hair out over a similar issue. By methodically testing each part of the system, I identified a cable which wasn't affecting the voltage to the solenoid, but wasn't allowing enough current to flow under load. The cable looked fine from ths outside.

What was it about the cable that made it perform ( or not) so.....?
