I have just spoken to Locktite HQ and they have long since stopped producing 242 or 243. There are quite a few sellers on Amazon and other places that are selling 243 but the origination of these is a bit suspect (!)

Does anyone have an alternative they would recommend please? This is to lock the bolt on a Kong Swivel (yes a swivel!)

Thanks team

Genuinely not wishing to say this appears wrong but

Specialty Glues

242 is listed on their official web site.

Surprisingly they dont show it in larger sizes, but I guess this isnt indicative that the larger bottles arent the real thing.

Loctite is a trademark of Hempel. 242 & 243 remain current brands. For the quantity not cheap, but very very effective. My company is not allowed to buy or try any other locking or sealing compounds because we can't afford to risk the trouble that would ensue if they don't work properly.

Medium strength slightly oil tolerant 243; High strength 270; Bearing fit 601; Thread sealing 577.

It's "Henkel", not "Hempel"

They give very good support to Industry. I retired almost 5 years ago so my info risks being out of date. Don't know if it's widely available but I have a copy of their 100-page "Solution Guide". This shows what and how to use their extensive range. Here's a page from their "Thread Locking" section.

We advise using araldite 2011 or huntsmans epoxy on threads that hold the quicKutter rope cutter and spool in place. As long as you get a low temperature you can then use heat to soften the epoxy for removal. Add talcum if it's warm to stop it running. Obviously start with clean bolts/threads

OK the answer is Locktite 2400....... does the same but less toxic.....that’s me sorted :)
Thanks for that. I was just looking for some 243 this very morning but didn't want to buy old stock from ebay. Did you figure out what Threadlocker Normal was on your journey?

No I didn’t however the 2400 can be used anywhere that you would have used 243, it is A safer less harmful version. Locktite don’t officially endorse its use for marine application but as Vyv and others have been using it for years that’s good enough for me. As it happens it’s on Amazon Prime for £5.99 yes only a small bottle but it’s plenty for what I want it for ?

Typically I found a very old unopened 3ml tube of 243 so i've put a bit on a bolt and nut to see if it hardens overnight before using it.

But i'm a bit confused by all this. Henkle website for 2400 here LOCTITE 2400

Click on "threadlockers" and you get their featured 243 etc with no mention of 2400 Threadlockers

And no one knows what the deal with their "Normal" is. Market ting fails are not helping.

My love of a bargain sees I can get 50ml of 243 on Amazon for 1/4 of the price of 50ml 2400 but all the sellers seem linked to India. If its still a current product there's a good chance its recently made and will have some shelf life left but how well does it travel. But when the same 50ml 243 is 40 quid at RS I start to wonder if the stuff on amazon is even fake.

This is interesting on its shelf life https://docs.rs-online.com/e961/0900766b8110bf86.pdf

Haha, don’t get me started! It was the Indian suppliers on Amazon that raised my initial alarm bells. So I rang Locktite and this was when I found out that it has been dropped as a product but the lady I spoke too said that there is a lot of old stock out there....... she also mentioned that there are suspect copies out there too? As you say RS is a lot more money. I settled in the end for the 2400 at a fair price direct from Amazon and not a third party.

I think I have ’trust issues’ ? .

It certainly used NOT to be true that buying direct from amazon was a sure guarantee it was genuine. I think that might have improved though but watch out for "fulfilled by amazon" which could well be decent looking fakes given to amazon to do the selling and packing. I doubt they would do much due diligence for checking everything they sell that way.

It won't ever harden in open air. It's an anaerobic reaction - they work by curing when free air is removed. If you do a nut and bolt up with it it cures almost immediately.

I'll let you know if i can undo it by hand tomorrow. When it goes off it stops hardening (or so i've been led to believe) so if it hardens i'll assume the 5 to 10 years it spent in the back of a drawer did it no harm.

I wish I could remember how long this had spent in the drawer, I'm guessing at least 5 maybe 7 years. After 24 hours it solidified but it hasn't adhered to the metal as you'd see removing an OEM part that had thread lock on it. It couldn't be wound off by hand so I used a toque wrench at the lowest setting of 8NM and it didn't get a click. The medium threadlocker should require 20NM I think I read. It would prevent a nut shaking off probably but for a boat application where we want corrosion protection as well I'd say old threadlock is not up to the job.

It was all of the FBA sellers that were my concern. 2400 arrived yesterday sold by Amazon...... all good ?
