I was wondering if anyone could tell me how the locking wheel in the middle of a boats steering wheel works, the one on my Beneteau 411 is less effective than it used to be.

Thank you for your help
regards Neil

mine is a clamp in 2 parts that when the knob is tightened it pull the 2 sections together nipping the knurled section of the wheel spindle

My Lewmar lock is a big screw in the centre of the wheel boss. Screwing it in pushes the rod against a small soft nylon? insert that compresses and locks the wheel, if yours is like mine you could try extending the rod by 5 mm or so with some sort of extension piece so that the nylon is compressed more. It might work and cannot do any harm.

I was looking into fitting a lock on my wheel but on asking around was told that the Whitlock/Lewmar centre screw down types tend to give up and shouldn't be relied on for mooring in currents. I have no further information about how or why. I tie mine by the way.
