Lock GPS Coordinates

I am tempted to get my old Sextant out and check some of these Sat Nav readings.

I need two other people with Sextants to check my figures against theirs. My readings were never much good any way, I was always pleased if I got within a mile of where I really was.

If you search that location in Google MAps it says youre here:
上海凯隆酒店设备用品有限公司

Middle of Shanghai !!!!!

I know where I am and I refuse to get drawn any further into this locational lunacy :D

Oh, that's rubbery... Always fancied a trip to PVG.

No, I am too mean to splash out on the iPad version...it's just the iPhone one with the 2X button pressed to fill the screen.

Charting stops at Teddington, but you can have the pretty pictures from Google Earth overlaid.

My Garmin handheld GPS agrees with the Navionics position by the way, and it is p@ssing with rain down at Teddington Lock.....I am now drying myself!

While thats the last time I bother do anything for the forum ;)

I took the coordiantes from Wikepdia as someone had gone to a huge amount of trouble detailing each lock so I asumed the coordiantes were right. I checked a few out and they seemed to be ok.

I will putting them in my GPS and will amend as I cruise.

It is interesting this is seems to be a touchy subject for some people.
Do we need the coordinates not realy. Im sure we all have the "fantastic" thames chart that EA does plus local knowledge and if you got a portable car sat nav it will work (sort of apart from trying to put on the nearest road)

But I like toys my boat is based at Walton its a river cruiser so why not have my GPS dispalying the next lock.

Also while you guys have mastered the Thames some new members may appreciate the list. While I'm sure there are errors on it.It is a start and if gets amended over time we can have a decent up to date list that some members and internet goers might appreciate.

Cheers
Matt

Not a 'touchy' subject per se as far as I'm concerned - but it does seem rather pointless. Also, If you are going to publish data of that type then I think some responsibility to ensure it is accurate is in order.

Hands up anyone that thinks I should change my handle to 'GrumpsOne'.

Shortly after my new boat was delivered to Penton but still on the hard standing I idly switched on the Garmin to see what it was like. When I looked at it a little while later right in the middle of the screen it said "Penton Hook" - very re-assuring :D

Pointless to you but not to me or possibly other people. I agree with you accurcy of the data though unfortunaly I don't have access to any good mapping software google maps/earth is ok but as other said not the greatest and we are dealing with small areas.I will update as time goes by or if more people were were interested we could take our closes two locks and publish our findings.

Basicaly it was just to get the ball rolling if its just me I will roll along all by myself.

Regarding your name change I don,t think this forum would be quite the same without boatone ;)

Cheers

Not pointless. It could be useful if one were giving out coordinates to a Police, Ambulance or Rescue Helicopter. Apart from anything else it is good practice in the use of Sat/Nav and paper chartwork.

You know yourself Tony. Practice makes perfect. For example, using a Sextant isn't like riding a bike. The more you do the better you get. I bet your calculations today would not be half as accurate as they were 30-40 years ago. I know mine are appalling.

We have to give out grid references to the emergency services. They have some sort of map they work from , they don't use co-ordinates.

I shall look what the grid ref for Tedders is tonight when i start work.

I dare say inland the rescue services use a grid referenced map but bearing in mind the Joe Public doesn't have that map I feel confident that if I gave lat/lon to an Ambulance, Police, or Services helicopter they would find it very useful. Bear in mind a grid reference could be a square mile whereas lat/long is pinpoint.

Mate, the river goes only two ways. Up, or Down.

I use a handy book (Nicholson Ordinance Survey) which gives you useful info, such as distances between locks, a beautiful map/picture and info about riverside businesses etc.

Can't beat it! Turn the sat nav off...

There is a publication that identifies recovery points that the emrgency servcies use for the length of the river, it has been discussed on here before and given time I could probably locate it.
