Hi all,

Is there anywhere I can find the Coordinates for all the locks on the Thames I am building up a nav database for my secondhand Garmin GPS I have just put in the boat. Before everyone starts ;) I know I shouldnt need it on the Thames or get lost I just like toys.

I can get them of google earth I was just wondering if it had already been done and posted somewhere.

Cheers
Matt

Not sure of the coordinates but can thoroughly recomend getting the Thames Chart if you have a Standard Horizon plotter. It has all the locks, weir streams etc and its useful to see where you are if you are on an unfamiliar stretch.

You'd be surprised how many folk take the wrong channel approaching a lock. (downstream I mean...).

I find a GPS is good for stopping me speeding (no comments please, from other folk), but quite often a quick look at the screen can give you an idea if there's time to go down for a quick Jimmy Riddle....

Wikipedia seems to have most of them , i just googled 'Thames Lock Coordinates' ... ;)

Cheers Howard utlised this resource this afternoon a couple where off so I have changed them in my list below.

Although most do not have the correct punctuation it will do for me however I thought I would post them on the forum for two reasons first being if someone is a whizz with Excel i'm sure the punction could be sorted it out in a minute or two. Secondly if anyone searched the forums we now have it.

The co-ordinates for Teddington Lock in the list below appear to be wrong....they do not agree with those posted by Howard and are inconsistent with those for Richmond and Molesey.....

I bet there's a lot more errors in that list, Without even checking, there's something odd about the longitude of St Johns.

Bit of a pointless exercise anyway IMHO, why not do the whole river trip and let the GPS record the positions when actually in the locks? Much more fun/interesting :D

And please, no more repeating of the whole tedious list !

I have just put the co-ordinates into the Navionics app on my iPad.... The position for Teddington Lock on the list is a field near Amersham, Howard's co-ordinates come up as Lensbury Club's playing fields but at least you can see the lock from there.....

:)

St.John's Lock comes up ok on the position quoted!

No, they are all total rubbish.... How do you get 68 minutes of Latitude ( as in 51 68 030 N).and 66 minutes of Longitude (1 66 874W).

If you put the pointer in Google Earth above Teddington Lock office , you get the picture shown below ...

Note the co-ordinates at the bottom of the picture and compare them with the ones i gave.

Get a boat in the lock to tell you what the co-ordinates on their GPS are, Howard.

No, get scientific - ask the next ten boats to do it then let us know what they all say :D (make sure you tie them all up to the same bollard though!)

You might even find the lock is moving about a bit with the tide .......
