Loch Spelve

I presume a lot of these beacons get placed as far out as can be comfortably achieved, without necessarily indicating "safe water". Perhaps a beacon got dislodged and replaced not quite so far out, accounting for the discrepancies in the charts? Are the different charts based on the same survey?

We were in Loch Aline last night, and anchored just before the moorings at the top of the Loch in 6metres at high tide. Tons of places to tuck in at very reasonable depths a smallish Nicholson Ketch was anchored out in the middle of the Loch in the 10 metre pool. Wanted to be alone I suppose. You found the mud then :encouragement:

Donald

Not me, but I must admit that's what I do. As it usually gets busy with boats arriving late into the evening and I've twice had to move after being used as an anchoring target I now just drop the hook out in the middle in 11m or so in a place where nobody else is likely to go and have myself a restful, undisturbed evening. I've also found a mud-free spot out there so now have it marked on the GPS so I can hit the same spot each time.

So, how was the Tummy-tum-tum after the mussels? :-)

I'll try the loch, but never the mussels. Never have. Yeugh.

Like the red one at Easdale, which is spang in the middle of the shallow patch it warns about, unlike the green one opposite which is right on the edge.

Word of warning: Admiralty Leisure Chart Folio SC5611.9B incorrectly shows the green beacon in the entrance as being at the south edge of the rock shelf.

In fact, as BA2387 clearly shows, the shelf runs SE from the beacon.

We'd been in and out of Spelve several times without incident using the proper full size BA charts, but scraped the keel the first time we used the Leisure Folio.

This was using the 3rd edition SC5611 dated 2009. Don't know whether the error has been carried into later editions.

Antares Charts have the definitive recent survey of this channel. Always use that nowadays.
It shows the beacon on the southern tip of a drying rock, but 1m and 2m bits protruding slightly S & E

Interestingly if i recall correctly our track on Navionics seems to go North of the beacon when passing south of it.

Indeed. The Antares chart looks to be more accurate than both the SC5611 and BA2387 charts, although Antares' own cautions should be heeded.

However, my word of warning is directed towards those who use BA paper charts; there is a serious error in SC5611.

Incidentally, Navionics charts also have a warning that the beacon has been incorrectly charted.
