Have booked a cottage for a weeks hols and am going to drag our boat 350 miles to soak some petrol in and around Loch Fyne.Have bought some second hand charts off the net, 200mtrs deep in parts and most of it over 100 ! Submarine exercise areas as well. Have any you folks any experience there? Anything dodgy (apart from subs!) to look out for? any particulary interesting or dont miss areas ,any comments you have will be welcome

Don't know how far you want to travel but Kyles of Bute worth a visit with Kames Hotel excellent for food and has moorings.
Inverary and Tarbert both very interesting, latter is a super little harbour but can get very busy in season. Beware of large saily boat regatta - not sure of the dates in 2004, Scuttlebutters will know.
Avoid Otter Spit and take extra lengths of anchor warp.
The area is superb, scenery wise and I've yet to meet a Sub in Loch Fyne proper. Suppose that doesn't mean they weren't there though. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Me one of those raggies that sails there often from my base at Troon. The Loch is great to explore, Tarbet a must, lots of pubs and places to eat, a nice highland village, very busy and infested with racing yachts during the Scottish series race week about may/June? just round the corner to the north is a small bay with moorings at the Stonefield Castle hotel, well worth a visit and wander around the gardens. Lots of places either side of loch to stop and if so anchor in not too deep water close to shore. Lochgair a nice spot, narrow entrance then bay opens up but a little muddy at low water. Otter Ferry another nice spot, just avoid running aground on the spit...many have before despite well marked. Inverrary has harbour but best to anchor off to north, a nice town to visit with Castle etc. North of Inverrary at the head of loch not much there but nice seafood bar with moorings. As for submarines the whole of the Clyde is a submarine exercise area and occasionally they do venture up Loch Fyne playing thier war games but not a problem. They will advise you on ch16 if they are doing anything dodgy, occasionally trail towed array up to 1500metres astern and they sometimes get twitchy then. No real problems, the wind can go from nothing to plenty in a very short period of time due to surrounding hills but generally the watr will remain pretty flat. Beware of the Rest & be Thankful - a good climb if towing, you can save a couple of miles and the climb (depending which side of the loch you are staying)if you stay on the M8 and head for Greenock then Gourock and then ferry to Dunoon. Western Ferries just West of Gourock have the most frequent service.
Inverary, Creggans Inn on opposite shore from Inverary, Tarbert, Kyles of Bute, Rothesay for lunch perhaps.

It's been a couple of years for me, but it was superb. After a day's winter hillwalking there is nothing like it. It's character with a capital C! Hopefully it will never be taken over by one of the plastic brewery chains.

Make sure you go up into the upper loch - its a grand place right up to Inverary but obviously unless you have decent charts be careful going beyond to the head of the loch

It hasn't changed a bit in all the time I've been going there.. I was there over Hogmany and can't wait to go back again. The stuffed bear still greets you and it's just as creepy !
