Have you tried a proper old CCC guide - one of the hardback editions? They have lot more anchorages listed than the newer ones. I'll try to remember to check when I'm next where my 1934 copy is ... on the boat ...

Re: loch a\'chumhainn NW mull

Martin LAwrence covers it with instructions.....Isle of Mull and adjacent coasts page 103.. He gives a chartlet which seems to show around 5 mters till abeam Goat Island then reducing to 2 metres in the anchorage. He warns of drying patches in the text which he shows.

This book is on sale at most scottish chandleries.

Re: loch a\'chumhainn NW mull

ML only covers the outer anchorages, not the inner pool.

There may be 2m, but I would only want to try it in a flat calm at neaps - and here's why /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Re: loch a\'chumhainn NW mull

My (1974 hardback) CCC directions don't hint at anything further in than Goat Isle.

Re: loch a\'chumhainn NW mull

Seems fine for a bilge keeler and may even stay afloat on neeps however if the OP takes his fin in there then maybe he needs a couple of legs to stop the coffee spilling at low tide. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: loch a\'chumhainn NW mull

thanks for all the info. i'll check the old ccc guidebook, but its also on the boat... the old chart was most helpful, have ordered a copy. doesn't look too hopeful for the pool at LW tho unless find a deep bit to wait for the water to return

thanks /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I've now checked. It gets a full page in the 1932 edition (p204) and the same words almost exactly appear in the 1971 edition (p161). It's called Luch Cuan both times. There is also a very detailed plan on No 12 of the sketch charts in the 1981 edition. The two metre / one fathom contour runs barely three cables further inland than Goat Island, which is why I don't think they bother with much beyond that.

If it helps for me to type it all in, let me know.

I feel the same as the chjart also suggests not much water past Goat Island Maybe check tomorrow on the boat using my wonderfull Horizon plotter which has the tidal heights.

I did a circumnavigation of Mull many (20?) years ago, and I am pretty sure we stopped at Loch Cuan. It would explain why the sketch chart is one of the tattier ones in the heap!

Beyond that I can't remember much, although I think it was a bit of an open and charmless place.

Re: loch a\'chumhainn NW mull

I looked at my plotter today and it suggests the pool at the head has undesignated depth at chart datum but the channel is dried out . No details of drying heights but usually low tide is at least 1 metre above chart datum and high tide 2.5 to 3 metres.

Google gives the phone number of the post office there as
01688 400208. Might be worth a call but suspect it is westerly Centaur friendly JUST /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: loch a\'chumhainn NW mull

cheers to everyone for the info. will let you know how my dad gets on, he is heading there now, via various other west coast diversions.... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
