Lobster pots in the solent

coming in to Newtown yesterday evening and I hit a lobster pot marker. fortunately I didn't pick up the rope round the prop.

the marker was a black platic container and it was almost impossible to see in poor visibility. there seem to be dozens of them in the solent with little or no marking.

I'm very tempted to take a knife to any pot not properly marked

A very common problem, frequently raised here.
Black buoys are actually easier to see at night in low light, so maybe the owner has been reading the forums, and has decided that black paint is preferable to normal translucent whiteish container.

I wouldn't, apart from the rights or wrongs of it, you are not a policeman, and have no right to do that. Also, you never know who might spot you doing it, you could end up biting off more than you can chew?

Cowes Harbour Master will remove any that are not properly marked (Dan Buoy and Strobe) from within the Harbour Limits .

Big clump of them by castle point just outside of harbour limits we use them for our Jet Ski Training

Yep common problem.

There is an old boy who frequently leaves pots down in the approach channel to NTC. Once the line was right across the narrow bit - cleared by the NT guys.

We picked up a rope from a pot on our way back across from Cowes last Wed. night. It only stalled the engine when Col backed into my mooring. As it was late and you could not see in the brackish water so i left it until i went down yesterday. Which brings me to the point. We went nowhere near any pots so this roap made up of 2 spliced and weighted lines may have already have been cut beforhand. The lead weight was jammed between the prop. and cavitation plate and had to be removed under the surface with a junior hacksaw. I hate to think what would have happened if we were on shafts as any line cutters wold have added to the problem.

Maybe brown is planning to set up a task force with the red diesel tax money and police things like this to justify the tax. That way he is giving something back.

No. However tempting it may be, you might be leaving a lobster to starve to death in the pot (rather than being boiled to death in another one, I know /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif). Hadn't thought about it before, but the suggestion of towing it somewhere else is a good one because (a) you'll remove it from its existing, dangerous location and (b) the cretin who laid it will have marked the point on his GPS and may spend fruitless hours circling around, trying to find it again /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
