loans/morgages on buying a boat

Hello all

I would like to know any pointers in the task of determining if a boat is free of morgages etc before completing a purchase.

What should I say in the letter?
Is there a definitive list of addresses for financial institutions I should send the query to. (also places in spain/ NZ and Australia)?

Any other hints/ other suggestions would be appreciated
