LM 27 - any views?

Anyone any knowledge of the performance of the LM 27, particularly sailing ability/close handling under power. For what I'm told is the world's most popular motor sailor there seem very few reviews.

Hi,

This is only second hand, but a friend who had a LM29 said it sailed like a lead balloon. Lovely finish and fit out and good accommodation.

A close look at the rig and sails would repay inspection.

I hear from an acquaintance that LM's don't sail to windward and it's generally motor sailing.

I think the mistake most people make when judging the sailing ability - particularly the upwind sailing, is that they don't compare like with like. I don't know of any motorsailor that will sail as close to the wind as a Sigma 33.
So comparing like with like the LM is a good looking boat - the wheelhouse is towards the stern - similar to the Halberg Rassy 94 - so no aft cabin but a pleasant open cockpit area. Like all motor sailors she will sail off the wind well - Claymore is happiest, as I think they all are, on a Beam Reach with both sails able to be set well and draw to their fullest capability.
Upwind they will go ok through the light to medium wind range but our upwind performance drops right off once 18 Knots of breeze is exceeded. In really light airs if you have the time then they will sail quite adequately upwind but generally we furl the genoa and motor on full main. This is quite efficient in terms of fuel consumption and progress

One of the most recent yachting mags is promising a review of the LM 27 soon. We have an LM30 and are more than pleased with her sailing ability. Both main and genoa are brand new and set rather well. She is heavy at 5 tons so needs a bit of wind or we hoist the cruising shute in light airs. We kept up with a Moody 31 from the Lizard to St Marys. Came back fron the Scillies this year with a force 8 blowing us past the Needles and through Hurst and we never once felt over whelmed. Close quarters handing seems to present us with no more of a problem than anyone else trying to come alongside the same pontoon even Red 10 in Yarmouth with the tide cutting under the pontoon at an angle.
