Liverpool vs. Fleetwood ???

I’d pick Liverpool over Fleetwood any time, take no notice of the peeps saying it’s a long drag down the channel to get anywhere, they obviously do not know, or use, the short cut!. The previous draw back to Liverpool has now left and we have a new pleasant, for a Scotsman, manager. There will be lots going on next year and 2008, capital of culture etc. It’s a no brainer you know it makes sense, when you stay come across for a coffee or stronger.

Port Dinorwic

Never heard of it. Tried to find it in TravelManager, but TravelManager hasn't heard of it either. Tried Google, got 1st hit, apparently it's called Y-Felinheli on maps now!

Again, it sounds lovely, but too far (at the moment). Obviously great for day sailing, how restricted is one by the tide?

Cheers,

Steve

Port Dinorwic is indeed Y Felinheli and is just a couple of miles south of the bridges on the south side. Access is quite good (+_ 2hrs, I think) but it is TINY! You may have to phone to see if they could put you up.

I can seriously recommend the Menai area for any sailing. Anglesey nearly always has a sheltered side in which to play about, and the northern end of the straits seems to be sheltered in any conditions. Plus there seem to be lots of mooring buoys with no boats on them, ripe for the picking, providing you stay with yer boat and do the decent thing.

Auld goat indeed...Harrumph.
My fine vessel is indeed at B&FYC - or at least it was there at lunchtime.

I've used Fleetwood Marina down the years and like the place. You need to be on the Wyre side not amongst the Catholics at Freeport which is just a bit noisy at times - I'm not sure how much say there is in this as the place is much busier than it used to be.

I worked at Knott End Sea Centre for a year or two so am particularly fond of the Wyre, the channel and the bay.
Personally I prefer it to Liverpool which I just find a bit busy/exposed and certainly quite limiting in terms of somewhere to go for a daysail or a weekend.
There's plenty been said that I agree with already - Glasson is a nice wee place but can be a sod to get in and out of with only the 1 hour up to HW that the Dock Gate is open.
The channel is well marked as is the Wyre channel.

If the journey time was the same then if it was me, I'd be opting for Fleetwood.

have you considdered going a little further north, i happen to live quite handy for both marinas liverpool or fleetwood but choose to sail from maryport. eccelent access to open sea and great for short cruises around the solway, also handy for i.o.m. and ireland.
there is also the marina at whitehaven on the cumbrian coast.
a litle further to drive but worth the 2 hour or so treck for the cruising grounds available

Re: Oh Yes - Maryport

but have you seen the up front attributes of afforesaid barmaids, "i'll opt for one of the puppies with the pink noses"

Re: Oh Yes - Maryport

Having just looked at the website Maryport was sounding tempting already, and I love puppies.....

But sadly just too far.

Remember !

Always remember,

You can drive for an extra hour and go sailing, or sit on your boat for six whilst the tide comes in. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Y Felinheli it is!
Didn't think the Welsh (origional name) would mean owt to yer!
Main Dock-- 3.1/2 to 4 hours either side of HW.
Basin, dries out to very very very soft deep mud Springs.
Retains a couple of metres smallest Neaps.
Quite a strong current to deal with through the "Swellies "( between the Bridges).
Water all the time at the North end (Puffin Island).
South end(Caernarfon bar) needs to be treated with a lttle more caution.
The immediate area around "PD"-- Felinheli is great for day sailing.
Lots of racing going on last Saturday, till it really got blowing.
Must a bin gusting 8. Sunday was very fresh but loads of saily things out having a ball!
Don't know what they were cos I got a MOBO!
Some were wearing sails made of that new fangled high tech material.Ticky tacking gybby gibing or what ever you call it!
Shot past me at a heck of a rate, what a row! Could hardly hear me engine! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

because they're all out day sailing!!!!

if you have a mooring on the straits you can sail anytime of day, unless you wish to go through the swellies, and day sailing is ideal, plenty of places to go for the weekend (if the weather is ok ), and for getting out a little further like isle of man or ireland (north or south), its the ideal place to be 10/12 hours average sailing time...

beaumaris might even have a new marina before the next decade is up.(p.s 2010 onwards...)

waiting list is a little long, but i am sure that you could get a drying mooring if your boat can take the ground..

Hi kawa, there called dinghies or yachts, great fun, you should try one one day,
they tip up a bit, but i am sure you would be safe enough...

Re: Remember !

Absolutely! I drive 3 hours from Leeds to Pwllheli for that very reason. Liverpool is tidal and you have to sail for an hour before you're clear of the marked channel

Sailed one year out of Liverpool, Conwy 10 hours away for big sail, ut you can lock out and sail for say 4 hours the lock back in. As a working guy 4 hours sailing twice a week got me a LOT more use than local cruising. Honestly it ain't pretty and the tides a bitch if you get it wrong and yes it's a looong hal out of the river nut it ain't that far to Hilbre and frequent four hours out gave me a year of deep joy.

Oh yes never, ever, ever get caught in big wind over tide further up river than the Marina- it's orrible
