Liverpool Rock Channel

I'm hoping to make a passage from Beaumaris to Liverpool later in the week (yacht, 5' max draught, bilge), entering via the Rock Channel. I haven't done it before but it looks straight forward enough using the LYC pilotage notes and if the two buoys, Corner and Chip are in the place. The question is does anyone know if they are in place and if the usual transits are still valid. The above mentioned notes are shown as valid 2010, not too long ago then. Thanks for any help or advice.

My advice is if you haven't done it before then it's best to enter the normal way down the Queen's Channel. It's easier to find your way out than in and having at least seen it once there's a bit of familiarity.. People will say it's easy with GPS which is true but I think it's better to know where you're going without.

Thanks. Even if I go in the Queens route I'd probably come back through the Rock so could still do with knowing if the buoys are there.

Ah, the buoys. I haven't been through this year but I saw at least one recently from Brazil buoy near the start of the Rock Channel. They buoys are very small though and you won't see them even with binoculars way before you need to know where you are, going in. As I say, a doddle going out but much harder going in. I'll check round the club if you don't get the answer on this thread.

OK showing my age last time I went through I am sure they where Chip, Spud and Mash?

I was taught to go through (pre-GPS) by running in North of Sewer buoy, then heading east till Echo sounder had shoaled and come back up then running in on the light house (maybe slightly to port) and feeling the way up the rest, using the echo sounder...

start at the sewer buoy on a transit keeping the conspicuous dome between the two tower blocks. When abeam of the Brazil buoy head for it keeping offshore of the perch just off the lighthouse.

I did Liverpool to Anglesey via the Rock Channel a few weeks ago. My recollection is that Corner was there but not Chip. The transit of the dome between the tower blocks is still good.

...On the way in (from gr Orme) it saves only about 4 miles to head in via Rock Channel. Assuming your not late and the tides still flooding it's hardly worth the saving as theres a good current under you - go straight to Q5/Formby float and follow the channel in.
