Liveaboard near Bristol

I've just been offered a job in Bath, the plan is to move onto the boat, sail it down from Port Dinorwic and find a nice marina down there who will either turn a blind eye, or allow liveaboards. Needs to be commuting distance to Bath, the boat is an Achilles 840, 1.6m draft. Any suggestions?

You can sail up the Avon into Bristol City Docks where there is a marina. Not certain about further up the Avon, but there used to be a marina at Saltford. I don't know whether you would need to unstep your mast to access that far up.

Marinas are at Bristol Marina (expensive - something like 220 per metre), but not Bristol harbour which is fine but for which ere is a waiting list.

I think your draft is too much for the inland ones, but they are at Keynsham (Port Avon) - full, last I heard, Saltford (ok but they have funny rules like no kids) or Bath marina, where I lived for a while.

Good choices all, but I think you'll be limited by your draft...

Bristol Marina looks nice - and considering the money I'd be saving on renting 2 places up here I wouldn't mind paying a premium. Will drop them an email in the morning I think. Are liveaboard berths usually more expensive than non-liveaboard berths?

I stayed in the British Waterway marina just SW of Bath for 3 months on a similar contract. Very cheerful staff.

Shame about the waiting list, being up nearer temple meads would have been handy, going bristol to bath is much better on the train.

Portishead is just about in that time frame. Pill also. But Brissle is th emost likly to meet your draft.

If you end up in bristol marina the bristol ferry boat co used to operate a service to temple meads station.Tel 01179273416 or www.bristolferry.com to see if they still run it.council withdrew the subsidy I think .From Portishead its a sticky run on the A369 to Bristol at rush hour.

Well - Bristol Marina are full, they start taking applications in October for berthing contracts starting in April. Portishead has availablilty so I might have to deal with the longer commute to Bath.
Does anyone have any experience of staying there as an unofficial liveaboard?

One thing you might consider, is going to Bath on the train, it's a bugger of a trip in the car.
Trains from Nailsea or Bristol, I hear the bus from Bristol is quie efficient, you just need to ind somewhere topark in Bristol.
There are a few spots that then allow a ferry to the centreot temple meads

I can confirm that travelling by car in the morning rush hour from the SW towards Bristol is a total nightmare.

My younger brother had to leave Yatton by 6am to guarantee getting into Montpellier, Bristol before 9am. If he left any later he was late into the office and he was a key holder. The M32 is a total nightmare and it is the same in the evening hush hour going SW.

You are not officially allowed to live on your boat in Bristol Harbour, I think a max of any 15 days at one time and the harbour master is cracking down on this.
