Live AIS map

Got this link from another forum:

http://marinetraffic.com/ais/default.aspx?level0=100

I really didn't know this level of info was available on a website

And you can change the area and have a look at anywhere in the world.

So if you're planning a hijack, I guess you can work out where and when a particular ship will pass your hidey hole?

Although there are plans to collect AIS data world wide by satellite, driven by
our USA kissin cousins , at present it is collected by VHF and so most of these web sites are only in use in certaian areas where the site owner has managed to persuade local citizens to set up receiver stations connected to the web and run them 24/7 as a charitable occupation. Some of them are quite good where the stations are realistically situated and can receive the whole of a port area however many are situated in entirely unsuitable locations and furher stations are needed to fill the gaps. There are of course more gaps the areas with plots.

Take the busy area of the PAcific North west coast of america on this site and you will see that there appears to be a 100% shipping strike in progress..There is another site often mentioned here where the VAncouver receiver is deep within the city and so is fine for tow boats on the Frazer River but cannot hear the passenger ships and ferries in the Gulf Islands.

Maybe skippers are concerned about the lack of privacy however they don t need to fear most of these sites untill they get better coverage or the satellite system is put together by our paranoid neighbours across the pond.

For now they just seem to accidentally switch the sets off from time to time in certain areas.

Most of these sites do not transmit in live time but put in an unspecified delay.
