Live aboard Scruffs

Its a good piont, most of the really scruffy people I have met turned out to be rich - rich enough not to care what you think. Most of the battered boats have been a long way. Smart boat with smart people on them more often have never been anywhere and only got the boat as a status simble or for 'corperate entertainment' but thats only the one Iv'e met

I recall seeing a v scruffy beautilul L Giles 48' yawl, "Sprintime", in Maryport and thinking what a shame, to let it get like that. I later became very friendly with the owners, Tony and Mary Brown from the lake district, farmers, they had just completed their third circumnavigation. On close inspection, the boat was in perfect order, other than the paint varnish. A very tough, not young pair, they were friendly with Miles Smeeton.

Some of our best friends are live-aboard scruffs.... others are posh-live aboarders.

Alas people's finacial situations afloat are no more kind than those on land, and often when afloat it is easier to see the have's from the have nots.

End of Sermon...

When I was a live aboard I thought I was quite well dressed until a charming old man from the village gave me a pair of socks and a 1ooo peseta note...........

My daughter, the fashion maven, keeps sending things she thinks will work perfectly for the cruising life. They would, of course, if we owned a luxury yacht with perfectly controlled temperature/humidity at all times and huge hanging lockers. I tell her I quite like my scruffs, but she can't quite get used to the idea that anyone would be satisfied without all the fancy togs for dining out. Dining out? Hmmm... Perhaps when she comes to stay and brings the plastic.
