Littlehampton filmed by £2,500 drone

I fear that you are being left behind in the digital age

I have a few KTL followers who ask me to send them the DVDs

the last one goes out for freemans and people paid what they wished for it

worked okay

D

I presume it's my internet connection. There's not much I can do about that. Youtube usually works; Vimeo usually doesn't.

Must say I have a few of these drone things. I designed and built them myself. Been flying RC planes and helis for many years, so it was a natural progression for me.
The bigger one is a Hexacopter (6 motors), and it does stills photos using a 14Mp compact Lumix camera. The smaller one is a Quadcopter, and does 1080p 30fps video.
See here for a look at the Northern Highlands from the air....plenty of harbour photos from up here. Dont need a Facebook account to view, its all accessable.
I dont fly over water though, dont want to risk losing it in the drink.....

I'm with the others, it is just a little bit less amazing each time you see one. In the end it may become tedious. New technology does seem to work in this manner.

Television had a love affair with zooming and panning about 1964 but it looked a bit grim by 1965.

they have really come of age

I understand that the commercial ones have a tracking device so that it can follow you

and they are also designed to come back to you automatically

are they reliable?

waterproof ones have started to appear now - any experience?

as for tough flying conditions

I have one of those small helicopters

the shot I am after is a nice tracking shot on the bow

then a pull up and zoom out to reveal the land/seascape the boat is sailing towards so I need a good steady platform and a zoom that works

Aah, your not asking much Dylan! lol

Zoom on a small drone isnt possible. I use the zoom, but cant control it from the ground, and then it needs a larger drone to carry the larger camera, raising the cost by literally thousands.
You really need a drone called a Dji Phantom to do what you want it to. Do you own a Go-Pro already? If so, £400 or so will buy the basic Dji Phantom you need. Add a brushless gimbal to hold the Go-Pro, and your pretty much there. These have the basic GPS and height sensors to allow it to basically fly itself, but no tracking. The tech is possible, but not in cheap and small size as yet. It does have a return to home feature. Another extra is what they call an FPV system, which is the live video downlink so you can see in real time what the drone is seeing. I use a monitor to frame the stills photos, and a set of video-goggles to fly the smaller video drone. I can switch between my HDR "eyes" camera, and the actual video camera on the gimbal for framing the shot. The gimbal on both has a remote pitch adjustment so you can look down at any angle you need to frame the shots. Its kept totally level by itself, with brushless motors and gyros controlling the gimbal.

A good one for sailing would actually be a KAP rig, using a kite. A controllable gimbal can be attached to the kite, just the same as to a drone, and use the same video downlink and RC controller to move the camera around.
It would allow a great view of an area before you sail there. You could even identify channels to sail through etc.
If you can fly a wee 3 channel coaxial heli, then a drone is not much harder to be honest.

no go pro - I cannot match the shots to the ones I get from the other cameras

so I need a better camera than a go pro

maplins sell this

http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/yuneec-q500-typhoon-rtf-with-cgo2-gb-camera-yunq500rtfus-a74tg

which has a tracking jobby and a return to handset jobby too

and this

If its a decent camera you need, then look at a Dji Phantom 3. Its new out, and has the same 4K camera as the DJI Inspire.
The ones you linked to willl have worse quality than a go-pro to be honest. I hate the fish-eye from the go pro. I use a tiny Mobius Action Camera with regular lens.

I would recommend this one here for your needs:-

Its genuinely ready to fly and film stabilised 4K video and 12Mp stills, not missing some key bits like others out there.

£1300

I shall ask the KTL boys if they are in favour?

Aah, but thats a comparatively cheap example! My one cost more than my Eboat did, but please dont tell the missus! lol
Look up the price of the Dji Inspire1, as its really what you need....or a custom built job, ready to fly for around 6 to 10 grand......

ah well

the view from the cockpit is not so bad at times

the next cameraman who sails around the UK can take a drone with him

Dont stop, just keep going and going.....what a life!

Thought about making something up to hoist the camera up the mast for a different view? Im going to make something up for the wee Mobius camera I use I reckon, now that Ive thought about it. Make some cool videos alright!
