Hi ,

I am thinking of fitting a Lister petter 6 hp ( model AC1WM ) diesel inboard into my boat , which is a Caravela 25 ( 24' 6 " o/a 2.4 tonnes displacement ) .

1- Will an engine of this size be large enough.

2- Can you still get spares for this engine if so from where .

Thanks for any advice

Andy

Im not familiar with the Caravela, but its a heavy boat for 24ft and I guess 6hp would be a little under powered by modern standards. . However, if you are getting a good deal on a sound engine then go ahead. Spares are available from:

Lister Petter Ltd
Long St
Dursley
Glos
GL11 4HS

Also:
Sleeman and Hawken
Teignmouth
Devon

One key problem is corrosion on the alloy heads. The waterways tend to waste away and eventually combustion gasses creep under the head gasket. A new head is very expensive! Repair is possible if you get a good welder to fill up the waterway, re drill and file and then have the head skimmed. Another option is to get a secondhand spare, more are becoming available now as older boats ger re-engined.
This little engine tended to get a bad name because many were poorly maintained, in paticular if the sacrificial zinc anodes are neglected then the trouble outlined above is inevitable. With TLC there is no reason not to get reliable, inexpensive service from the motor. Brian.

Hi
It would not push your boat at max hull speed. You would really need at least 8 to 10 hp. We had a Petter in a Hurley 24 many moons ago. It was not really a marine diesel but an industrial engine fitted in a boat. I should think spares could be a problem now but check with a plant hire firm. These engines used to be pretty common as small power units for pumps, freezer lorries etc. Cheers - but go for something bigger and newer.

Re Brians comment
Our AB1 had a cast iron head. The later mini twin went for ally heads with all the troubles Brians says. Check what the head is made of. Cheers

imho
dont touch a "mini twin" with a barge pole.
they should have reinforced "crank-cases" to help prevent the con-rod from trying to escape from it.
they are a derivitive of the AC something or other that was a very bad engine imho of course
a friend of mine used to have a Carrevella some 15 yrs ago. very nice cruiser & was powered by the volvo saildrive ( honda "inboardized 10 hp outboard" on a volvo leg )
