I assume you mean Leros in the Dodecanese. If so, it is well covered in Rod Heikell Greek Waters pilot. There is both a marina and a boatyard (Evros) in Lakki.
No personal experience, but contact details are in the Pilot.
Two possibilities. Evros boatyard on the E side of Ormos Lakki (conveniently close to Lakki town); or go to the north of the island at Ormos Partheni, where there's a shore hard next to the small airfield (part of Agmar marine - the marina in the west of Lakki bay). For some time Partheni has been popular and good value for money. Evros boatyard in E Lakki is a more recent development which some rate as more convenient for its adjoining pontoons and the larger town; useful if you're doing work on the boat both while ashore and afloat.
Don't write Kos marina off; both ferry and air links are better there, and local facilities more versatile (as you'd expect on a more populous island). Samos also has a good marina, tho' it's local services don't yet have a lot of experience.
There are some notes about all these places on my website.
But don't let's call the whole thing off...Apologies for spelling mistake I was of course referring to Nisos Leros in the Dodecanese.
Tranona.. I do have a copy of Heikell ,and have read his description of the facilities, however I have found that he can be very out of date and sometimes inaccurate in his guide, ,that's why I was trying to get some first hand and up to date info from anyone who had actual experience of the place. which Jim has kindly provided. Thanks Jim.
Duncan....Don't drink on an empty heid.!!! Do you fix cars with rope,or is it merely for towing them ?
Thats OK Jamesmar. Just that there are often posts here and in other fora that ask the most basic questions or show that the poster has not done any research of their own. Therefore to get useful response it is perhaps better to give a little bit more to go on in the request!
Well, I'd agree with JB as far as localities are concerned, but as far as practicalities go I'm far from comfortable with either.
The new "marina" on the E side of Lakki is neither a marina, nor really convenient to the town. It is a dusty Godforsaken hole buldozed out of the hillside in which a large number of yachts can be parked, those more than a week or two there the same colour as the red dust surrounding them It must be a klick or two into the town which offers more facilities than the "marina". ie you could buy a car battery or a V belt there (maybe). There seems next to nothing in the marina, though a few desultory workmen were sen there three weeks ago. OK, they have a stonking great lift and a short quay for boats afloat but as yet it is very much in the basic of basic days. To be fair 18 mths ago it was nothing, so will doubtless improve.
I went to the boatyard at Partheni too. Ha! A bleak boat park half a klik from the water with no visible facilities at all, and no sign of pontoons or services either. Nearly as unimpressive as the overpriced place it is associated with in W Lakki harbour - a couple of rather exposed and overpriced jettys, more of a quay than a marina.
No, go to Kos - if they have room. (visitors get thrown out regardless of weather at Friday noon to make way for the returning charter fleet, and there ain't nowhere at all to run to (except Turkey) if the weather is bad (cos you sure as hell don't wanna sail upwind into a F6 meltem)... Proper facilities, squeaky clean, lots of "parking". Well run, cheap by western standards. Or try Turkey.
Leros is a terrific place to visit, but seems a hardship way to save a few hundred euros on overwintering to me.
Mash, I agree your assessments. Both places are just 'hards', one with a quay, the other with a couple of moorings nearby. From what you say, sounds like the pontoons promised for E Lakki this season haven't yet arrived?
Oddly, Partheni has some enthusiastic users who return year after year. They quote 'value for money' and 'convenient for airport'. Not my taste, but there you go.
There are some pontoons at E Lakki, rather, there is a pontoon. It is clearly new, and just a start. There were boats on it three weeks ago, but it would be a long hot hike into town. Still, this is a big development, so maybe getting in on the ground floor is not such a bad idea. It will be industrially noisy and dusty for a couple of years yet, buldozers, trucks and jackhammers hard at work. Everywhere else in the area (inc Turkey) is getting very busy and marina spaces are not easy to find. Even Marti is now full, so don't hold your breath.
Partheni - convenient for the airport. Hmm, maybe, but who flies there, and from where? It is only for medium turboprops - ATR42 size and I guess you'd be coming from Kos maybe, or Athens. Doubt they get more than 2-3 flights per day, and they'll be pricey. Why pay a costly flight when the difference would pay the slightly higher prices in Kos, which is far more convenient for connections with N Europe. There isn't even a corner shop there, let alone a bar -absolutely nothing. But I'll bet it is cheap.
