Liquid gasket

I've used things like that a number of times - but always in the context of machined metal/metal interfaces. There may be too much give in the situation you suggest for them to be appropriate. What is wrong with silicone? Or a foam-rubber seal?

Liquid gasket? Appropriate for use between a small Jabsco raw water pump body and it's cover plate, substituting for the expensive paper gasket...?

I'd recommend using Fernox LSX, available from all good plumber's merchants. It it's a silicon sealant that sets "soft" and can easily be removed if you need to do any work. It's sealed a lot of things on my boat, including the chainplates which go through the deck and the stanchion bases.

Not really because the thickness of the gasket sets the correct end clearance. Leave out the gasket and the fit may be too tight.

I used it on a gearbox cover (liquid gasket, that is). Pretty rubbish I thought. The previous owner had used it and the excess was lying around in lumps inside. The gasket I "made" with it wasn't particularly oil-tight. I prefer a paper gasket and Hylomar.

That Fernox LSX is excellent for problem water joints.

Like others, why not use a silicone sealer?

I've refitted my cover plate using a Jabsco paper gasket and some Teflon grease 'cos I had some handy and it helped hold the gasket aligned to the cover plate while I got some screws started - in a very tight-for-fingers space. If it works well, I won't 'fix it'...... but I shall get some Fernox LSX and some spare paper gaskets, which are a LOT cheaper than a Speedseal.

I appreciate that I may not have applied the Instant Gasket properly. However, if that is a possibility, then to my mind, the proper route is much preferable.

I agree with first post
On my unit the paper gasket gives a poor seal
You do not have to have a great dollop of gasket compound
Jut enough to work
I would respectfully suggest that properly applied it is an improvement

I have used liquid gasket a couple of times on the water-pump cover without problem. I also had a spectacular success once on a friend's boat when there was a gross leak on his diesel lift pump - we didn't have the tools to dismantle this odd fitting. I just massaged some gasket into the line of the gasket and hey presto, it stopped leaking, for several weeks.

But without the gasket you cannot get the clearance correct ... as Clyst found out.
Gasket and a thin coating of Hylomar would be my preference for a tricky situation Your difficulty could be due to damage to the pump face, a little bur on the edge perhaps, or even a distorted cover

One thing to remember with most all of these liquid gasket/sealants is that the surfaces must be clean and have no oil or grease other the liquid gasket will not seal correctly. Also we all tend to tighten the joint immediately like when a paper gasket or o-ring is used. Liquid needs time to partially set before clamping the joint up to its final tension.
