Linking chain - different gauges/lengths

Regarding his comment on shot blasting ss I can only speak from experience with our own boat, not more widely. On that basis would seem that he perhaps exaggerates alot regarding the rusting.

Our ss toerail, mooring cleats and chain plates are lightly blasted (the builder did it before I knew anything about it, for appearances sake) and they do stain a little but mostly just a slight dulling. The toerail which was a specially pressed section has some spots that show rust marks but these seem to be because I think it went through the press brake after mild steel /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif but seems to have mostly cleared itself up now. But generally no worse than normal non super yacht quality level polished ss, for example, and a 15 minute brush over with a phosphoric acid containing stain remover cleans it up for a year or so.

Interesting the comments regarding the satisfactory use of 304 above the waterline ("little point in paying for it") - may help to put a few marina myths to bed.

Yeah, I wonder about this bit of folk-lore. I have a Kong swivel, no probs, and when I was at Laberwrach earlier this year, I noticed that the fastenings of the buoys to the moorings were using great big s/s shackles, immersed all the time.

When I extended my chain, I did a bit of research, and came to the conclusion that properly procured links were perfectly ok. If I am wrong, it will be when I have loads of chain out that it will fail - and just when do you have loads of chain out... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

This is a very interesting post as it has also helped with working out whether I should used stainless rigging screws on my galvanised chain plates. I used to have galvanised wire and screws but I have replaced for stainless (I have enough varnishing to do to worry about oiling wire!). So I would imagine stainless screws on galvanised chainplates will be OK?

Gael Force do a decent range of kit, from "consumer" to commercial fishing stuff. Shackles (including Green Pin - scroll down).

Efficient mail order, but the web site is a mess. Catalogue is worth getting (no connection other than a satisfied customer).

(sorry not an answer to your last question).
