Lily Cam, what's your opinion?

Apparently available in the UK from next February at around £650 but rumour has it that a 29 day pre-order option will be available(est price £325)to raise product awareness.

Done properly they would certainly sell the dream better than the shaky shots taken with a mobile phone seen on some adverts.

Regarding the drone: I haven't looked into the details but based on the video and a quick look into the specs, it looks like a nice package. Being waterproof is a big bonus, obviously.

It appears to be controlled by the very simple remote which I suppose let's you decide whether it follows you or does the 'loop' around you, takes stills, maybe operate the video, etc. But at the same time it appears to be limited to just those functions.

Max. altitude is 15 meters and I don't see a way to 'fly' it as you would a regular drone.

So as far as I can tell, it's a gopro that flies and follows you, but it's not for those who wish to take more control over where to fly and what to shoot.

All based on a quick look into the matter.

I like it but it isnt a replacement for a normal drone. It would be nice to have for the specific uses shown in the video like "follow me down the piste" but it is a one trick pony so you'd want a proper drone of Phantom3 standard too, in which case perhaps why bother buying two drones. The movies put up on here recently could not have been shot with the Lily because of its one trick pony limitations

I used to think waterproofing was an advantage but I'm now sure it isn't. I'm fully qualified in sending a phantom 1 to the bottom of the sea losing £1000 in a weekend, but the phantom 3 is so much better and so much easier to drive that I cannot imagine losing it in the sea

(famous last words... :D)

IMHO, being waterproof would be a big bonus even with Phantom 3. Let's take my boat as an example. The front deck is sloping quite a bit and with a bit of wind I can easily see the drone tilting over when landing. I could ask my wife to pick it up but that's not totally without risks either.

Basically whenever you are on your own with limited clear landing space it would be handy to just land it in the water and pick it up from there.

Also, there are many protrusions on a boat and catching something with the drone would be the end of a prop but not necessarily the end of the drone even if it got thrown into the water. Been there, I almost hit a flag staff on Mapis's boat but fortunately he was quick to save the situation.

But this is all a bit academic as Phantom is not waterproof and I don't think it will be anytime soon.

I'm not at all an expert on the matter but have you seen this?

No indeed I haven't. And I'm not quite sure what to make of it either.

Quick googling tells me that Liquipel takes your Phantom apart and they then spray it with a solution that makes it waterproof. The comments as to it's usefulness were varying. Might be a good precaution but it doesn't make the Phantom float.

I never "land" mine K. I grab it from hover, always, even if flying singlehandedly. On a ground landing it sometimes tries to "bounce" then "crab" along the ground

That explains the new nickname(s) 9 fingered jfm, I mean 8 fingered, no wait a minute, I mean 7 fingered jfm. ;)

Ahh, ok, on MM's boat we mostly brought the drone back whilst the boat was moving, which meant staying on the throttle and I didn't really even think of grabbing it myself. That's a good tip, thanks!
