I of course have a set of branded "Ocean" oilies. They keep me dry but are very cumbersome. I also have an older, much cheaper, set. These are much more comfortable to wear and pretty good at keeping the water out. Unless the weather is very bad I prefer the lighter set.

These now need replacing and I am looking for a modern equivalent. Need to be lightweight, breathable and suitable for day sailing in moderate rain but don't need the complexity of the "Ocean" type detailing (e.g. high neck closure, double elasticated cuffs etc).

Following a thread a few months ago I have had a look at those supplied by Decathlon and they look worth a try. Anyone any experience of them or recommendations of similar cost/weight?

I've no experience of the Decathlon sailing waterproofs per se, but all my running, cycling, swimming, kayaking, walking, camping and climbing kit is from Decathlon. The fit can be odd so you definitely need to try on first. However of the fit is good, then their kit is almost unbeatable for the price.

In my experience it is well thought-out and designed kit using good materials for a bargain basement price.

Many years ago I bought myself a set of Musto non-breathable 'Ocean' oilies which were brilliant in my then Sadler with no sprayhood, but nowadays, for my coastal, Channel and North Sea sailing of no more than a day or so, the lesser 'Offshore' version is perfectly adequate. Brands are very much a matter of price and fit, so personal choice should lead the way.

I bought a Decathlon sailing jacket a few months back, not for sailing but for working on the canal in the rain, it was the more expensive of the three they had but I am well pleased with it.
It is comfortable to wear and work in with a good collar and well thought out accessible pockets.
It does not seem to direct the rain on to my trousers in the way most waterproofs like to do.
It is medium weight but waterproof and breathable, the inner cuffs are rubber but not uncomfortable.
It has a good deep tail of cordura type fabric which keeps your bum dry. I do not use the hood much but it is not too bulky and your neck is not restricted unless you put the front zip right up.
After a few months hard work it has a few marks (since they stopped doing maintenance or cutting grass the locks are always being painted) but it will be going sailing with me.
It is not plastered with makers advertising though there are some reflective patterns.

Happy to recommend it as a good value medium weight sailing jacket.
