Currently use a 3.5hp, weight is about 13kg.
Considering going up a size, and was looking at Tohatsu, but a 5hp at 20kg doesn't seem like great value for the extra weight. Tempting to skip it completely and go all the way up to a 9.8hp, 26kg, but that might be too much for my dinghy.

Any specific makes out there that pack a bit more punch in the c.6hp size range?

And yes, obviously I'm buying this either outside of the EU/UK.

There are some fairly light 4strokes now but I question the build quality or robustness.

We have a Yam 5hp 2 stroke which is good power to weight ratio but as you may know the 4 & the 5hp are basically the same engine. We don’t need to go high as we’re both light and can plane with it.

The 6hp yam jumps up in weight so you’d be better getting the 8hp as I think again the 6&8 are similar.

Depends if you’re using a hoist. I can just about manhandle my Yam 5hp into the dingy without a hoist. But all that said, since getting a Torqeedo then our Yam barely comes out any more. Only if I need to go over a mile at 12kts does it get a man outing.

Just wondering if the engine also powers the mother ship.

The problem with outboards is they are not generally designed to power displacement boats. Only the Seagull range catered for this group. Hence all the wonderful different array of props they came up with. All you get now is possibly a prop with a bigger DAR, only if they do one.. The biggest drawback when going up in power is the limited diameter options.

We bought a 1997 yacht which had a 1997 Tohatsu 6hp outboard. Apparently the 6hp is a de-tuned 8hp and the only difference is the carburettor. Off eBay a new (cheap) 8 hp carburettor was bought and it runs perfectly. Great Engine. Would not believe its 25 yeas old.

What size is your dinghy? T9.8 planes our 2.9m ply floor dinghy at 17/18kts 2 up. Skips over the chop keeping us dry most of the time.
3.4m, rigid. It's fairly light, about 45kg. But it's designed primarily for sailing and rowing, so it has a bit of rocker. I'm not sure how much it will want to plane. Not impossible, there are wide flat sections aft.
My main worry is that, being a nesting plywood dinghy, it's not going to be happy with too much weight or power. It handles the 3.5hp very happily but I'm not sure it's clever to go above 5-6hp.
