My bank ....
Is a Heavy Duty Diesel Starter of 100 A/Hr as my main start battery ...... B on the switch.
Second used mainly for Domestic use is a 120 A/Hr truck battery ......
Both are 'crankers' ...... I do not advocate using small car battery's - but I can honestly say that I have used them on my Alacrity and Snapdragon 23 years before - due to lack of space. I tried Leisure battery's and they were ok ..... but I didn't get any more length of life out of them than the others .... cost me about a tenner more though !!
My Domestic is charged regularly from the engine while motoring out - once the starter battery has had a good dose put back and I try to plug in when I get on pontoons. While the boat is laying alongside her normal berth - there is a trickle charge solar-panel bought in a car shop that keeps the domestic battery topped up. Yes I do occasionally use the 120 A/hr job to start the engine .... believing that the load may be good for it, but then I think its wrong !! But hasn't done it any harm.
The set has survived for near 5 years now and I therefore feel I can claim that I have had my money's worth.
Cost of each battery : 100 A/hr Diesel HD - 45 quid from local Tyre / Battery Centre ..... 120 A/Hr Truck - 60 quid from specialist Truck centre .......
Oh by the way ..... don't forget that trucks use often 2 x 12V banks ... with the heater / refrig units being fired from one etc. etc. The battery's are not different types . but generally identical.
Finally - I don't argue with the 'correct' battery information about designs for certain jobs etc. - far from it - but in all the years I have found that in my case and many others I know it is not strictly necessary as the batterys rarely are discharged enough to make that difference.
Sorry but I shall carry on thank-you !!
