Should be (you mean in parallel/piggy back) both pumps have 2 NR valves so no return flow should result. But why?

Replace the lift pump with like for like or consider replacing it with a 12v electriv pump.

Save yourself years of worry, and a pain in the ass hard work priming the bloody thing, etc.

Buy a 12v lift pump and be done with it, best £25.00 I ever spent on the boat!

Assuming it is a conventional diaphragm type lift pump you can put the bulb in line with the pump and it will work just fine.

12v, easy to install, cheap, self priming system after installation, did I say cheap, and it works!

Is that because the priming lever doesnt seem to work? If so turn the engine around 1 rev, as the pump might have been on the top of its stroke, and the lever then does nothing.

second vote for priming lever not working if that's your problem. happened to me and I got really frustrated. gave up and called in the engineer. he advised me what was wrong, quick tug on the belt and twist of the pulleys and the lift pump worked again.....luckily he only charged me half an hour and I think had he not been a boat yard employee he would not even have done that!

Third vote for that. Its such an easy thing to overlook for those who are just starting on servicing/maintaining their own engines. As a unit, lift pumps are a pretty reliable and simple component. If they are kept free of gunge (check the gauze filter) and the diaphragm is not perforated they normally give years of trouble free use....

Why.....The Bulb will quite happily pump THROUGH the lift pump if placed near the tank for priming purposes!

Sorry about late info, I got the pump sized by phoning them up. Told them what engine I have and they said you need this pump, I bought two, one as a spare and fitted the other. Never let me down yet and I have a means of pumping out the diesel tank (rather slowly) if/when I need to.
