I have 2 questions. Any advice and opinions would be most welcome.

- Can anyone recommend somewhere I can get an Ocean Safety (OS) liferaft repacked in or around A Coruna in NW Spain? It does not have to be an OS rep.

- Do I need the liferaft recertified to sail in Spanish or Portuguese waters?

Under UK law boats under 13.7m (which mine is) are not required to carry a liferaft. If they do and the liferaft repack certification is out of date and the boat is in UK waters the authorities don’t care. You are committing no offense. However, in Spain and Portugal, I’m told, they may want to see some sort of documentation that says it’s ‘legal’.

A bit of background…. I can get it serviced locally, but the company said they could not recertify it as they’re not an OS rep. Ocean Safety’s answer is to pack it on a pallet and send it to their service agent on the other side of Spain. This is not a great idea from an economical or convenience point of view.

In the past, some people were occasionally asked for raft paperwork in Portugal but I've not heard any reports in the last couple of years and never heard of problems in Spain. Not sure which raft you have but, one of the Ocean safety ones is a rebadged SeaSafe. There appears to be a SeaSafe distributor in Portugal, Contra Fogo, with Lisbon and Setubal area phone numbers. Ocean Safety and SeaSafe rafts can be serviced in Gib if you're heading down that way.
