To judge by the TV reports tonight

This was a very good effort by a capable, well led, crew.

Look how badly things can go wrong - in a densely trafficked area.

This is a very sobering tale

I seem to remember that some of the internationally recognised distress signals are flares, jumping up and down waving arms AND a burning bucket or drum on the deck.

I know it probably dates back a year or two, but it's still in the books.

...yeah but...

I was always taught - "only ever step up into a liferaft" and "you don't leave the boat until the boat leaves you" therefore pouring petrol into the dog house throwing a match after it and then being blown into the liferaft by the resulting explosion seems a bit extreme and someting of a different magnitude to burning something in a bucket (hopefully galvanized)...

I think that if I confronted with your scenario I would have put the VHF on to "scan" and wait for it to pick up some traffic irrespective of channel and then talk to them.

Just a thought!

From memory weren't several of the abandoned Fastnet yachts subsequently recovered happily floating around on their own when the weather improved?

That assumes that there are people within range talking to each other, which becomes less likley the further you go out.

Re: torching the boat

yeah, tho the buring things on deck is usually for a big ship. Bit dodgy on a smaller boat where the liferaft leaves downwind which is exactly where the flames will go. Still the skipper says he doesn't plan to do it again, so all ok....
