lifejackets, Mandatory ?

[ QUOTE ]
It's now a legal requirement to wear a seat belt in the UK.

The same argument was given when the seatbelt law was proposed - and, indeed could still be said that the choice should be that of the individual. The perception was that you were safe in the car without a seat belt.

There seems to be the same perception about wearing lifejackets. The truth is you are more likely to survive with a lifejacket on than off.

Just because we don't like being told what to do doesn't make it it a bad idea.

No sensible person could argue with your logic.

Wearing a LJ at all times when on the water must ultimately, in the great order of things, save lives overall. No argument there.

My car is a classic car (AH 3000, 1960) which has no seat belts, (nor is required by law to have) but I now feel a little, slightly uncomfortable driving it with the way people think today. (Although at the time compulsory seat belts were introduced, I argued against them!)

People's frames of mind change through the years. No doubt, in a few years time, people will automatically put on a LJ when they get on a boat. People naturally have a "Luddite" perspective because they're reluctant to change or to be "told what to do".
