Hi all, will shortly be flying off to join a boat as crew, i have just purchased a gas inflating lifejacket (manual) and am not sure of what (if any) rules airlines may have regarding the carriage of these (hold/hand-luggage?). presumably the lifejackets on 'planes are gas inflating of similar type to nautical ones. Basically will i be OK with it on the plane?

thanks

Contact the airline and ask, there seems to be differing attitudes to gas bottles and the manner in which they are to be presented on check in/ carried on the aircraft.

You'd better check with the airline. I nearly got arrested at Houston for having a pipe lighter and pipe tool in my hand bagage. I had to put the tool in a padded envelope in the hold but the lighter remains at the airport for me to collect.
Thanks a bundle . . .

When I flew last year, was advised that it's OK as luggage, but cannot be taken into the cabin. Best to show them at check in before putting in your bag.

Don't think you will be allowed them except as hold luggage (Still best to phone the airline and tell em you will have them).
You are right about the Airline Lifejackets, they are all gas ones just like yours.

Lots of threads on this in past. Holds are not unpressurised. Many airlines will take lifejackets, a few won't. Read previous threads for information on links as to which will and which won't

Don´t Bother...

Your options,

Do not bother taking a lifejacket - nick the one from under your seat on arrival.
Or
Put your lifejacket in the hold baggage (it is the same as the one in the cabin)

If you put it in cabin baggage you will never get a dumb ground staff/security idiot to understand that it is the same as the one under the seat and they will try to take it away from you.

Re: Don´t Bother...

hmm like the idea of 'borrowing' one from the plane (they are only there for show anyway - not much chance of a swim after descending rapidly from the sky!) think i've still got the reciept for refund!

thanks all
