One per passenger is permitted on the airlines I have been on (BA, Olympic and Ryan Air). These were the automatic type as well.

You can take the lifejacket hand luggage but not with the cylinder. The compressed gas cylinder is consider dangerous goods and is not allowed on as hand luggage NOR checked baggage with most airlines.
I have carried them in checked-in baggage without a problem even though I shouldn't have.
If people have got away with taking them hand luggage then well done but you shouldn't have /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Best check with your specific airline or do as I do... put it in checked in baggage and hope they let it through.

The RYA & CAA seems to disagree with you - they are allowed as there is an exception to the dangerous goods rules. However, you still need the approval of the airline concerned.

IATA rules, which most airlines adhere to specifically allow lifejackets and spare cylinders to be carried. Most airlines will allow, but aircrew and groundcrew often don't know the rules in detail, so just say no to cover themselves. If you ask a supervisor to check the rules, then you will usually receive the OK

Super! That is great news!
Previously, all I have done is just looked up the rules published by the airline on their web site and they have always indicated "compressed gasses" as not allowed and I have never asked any further. I didn't think there would be exceptions for lifejackets.
Very sensible IMO.

Guess what ! Some aircraft carry these themselves. I would advise you to call the airline concerned and let them know.Different airlines put their own interpretation on what is acceptable.
Often the staff are confused and have to refer to their tech people.
Bottom line, the pilot decides. Our pilot friends who are also sailors and mobo's usually can't see a problem. But these days you should check first!
