I never see any black people wearing lifejackets in the magazines, nor in the RNLI adverts.

nor muslim females.

Is their some sort of double standard. or agenda?

Where we use our boats I have never seen anyone to enforce it, have you? Last time I saw any form of officialdom was about 5 years ago when I was approached by a customs boat whilst fishing. I think that they were just bored.

Unfortunately, a life jacket may have kept his head above water ( as he was a big lad) till his mate could help him.
I personally wear one at all times on deck, that's my choice. My kids wear one too, and that's my choice also. I thought the tone of the article was fine without being too preachy and it dawned on me that if I went overboard (perish the thought) with only my kids were onboard I'd better get a DSC VHF installed.Even in the Thames Estuary that could make a big difference.
I agree, however, that some people don't wear them. That's your choice which I presume you have made having after weighing up the evidence.

Well we do seem to be in the middle of a 'Point the finger' culture where we're more concerned about finding someone to blame and 'protecting' people from themselves.

And strangely people don't seem to be any bleedin happier!

Let's hope the magazines start putting more effort in good articles about stuff we enjoy rather than pandering to the sensationalist b*llocks! much of our media is obsessed with.

We've got DSC for the similar reason - if we have a problem someone can press the red button - don't need to worry about position if you can't read/remember it.
We also got one with a remote mike in the cockpit - which is blummin handy if you're 2 up and one goes over or is sorting out the 'issue' ... not had to use the dsc yet -other than to cancel alerts - also possible on the cockpit mike.

If you look very carefully at all the boaty pix, it's quite clear that only ugly people need to wear lifejackets.

The main/only reason we don't have cameras watching our every move, and police launches hiding behind headlands (yet) is because there is no money in it. But we do see radar and air surveillance of the Dover Straits, where there is some seriously big cash being made by prosecuting yotties who stray into the separation schemes.
And once we drink-boat legislation and the "rubber dinghy is a ship" legislation have been pushed through, you can bet your life that there will be whole army of flat-hats recruited to stamp out the sudden crime-wave that has been created by making a whole crop of innocent activities illegal. And somewhere, buried in someone's annual report, you'll find a target figure for how much they are supposed to collect from their "enforcement" activities to "offset the costs of providing the service"

Not so long ago, a freighter high-jacked in the Baltoic sailed though the straits unchallenged. And that's despite being warned by Interpol and other maritime authorities that the ship was heading that way.
