Well the memory said it was HMS Troutbridge, but I am subject to Foul Ups so I 'Googled' it and the concensus was Troutbridge. So for once it would appear that the memory does work.
I always remembered that ill-fated ship in 'The Navy Lark' as 'H.M.S. Troubridge', instead of 'H.M.S. TrouTbridge' - which I now find is the correct name.
Well, fifty years on, perhaps it's a wonder that I even remember the programme itself! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
What my daughter calls 'That evil smelling thing!'
What do you perfume the room with? I always smoked Balkan Sobranie, but sadly it is not made any longer, there is a poor imitation or two on the market, but apparently the use of yenidge (sic) leaf has been banned, so they both lack something. I especially liked the Black tin was it 759 mixture?
I used to smoke Balkan Sobranie when I was still an apprentice. White tin with black writing and a drawing on the lid.
Then I discovered Three Nuns and continued with that for many, many years. At first it was a round tin, then they changed to oblong. At that time it still came in little disks and you needed to rub the last couple out when filling. Extremely slow burning, I used to keep one pipeful going for close to two hours. It then started coming ready-rubbed in pouches; somehow it wasn't quite the same. Have not seen it for years.
I now fill my Petersons with with one of their own brands, called 'Irish Oak'. I have probably settled for this because it has some Perique in it - like Three Nuns, but Three Nuns had more. It gives a very distinctive taste. Like it said on the tin, 'None Nicer'.
Mm, strange that one of the Sobranie 'clones' is Peterson's Old Dublin. But the Sobranie you mention is the 'Standard' Balkan Sobranie, there were a couple of variations, one had a'manilla' coloured lid which had 'finest cigar leaf' and then the Black lid with gold lettering which was the 759 mixture.
Never could stop my stomach churning with the likes of Three Nuns.

Yes, it certainly was strong stuff and it did take some getting used to. However, if one persevered, it was worth it in the end. For me it was, anyway. I still miss it.
I tried 'Balkan Shag' once, but her father found out!
AND it's not 'left hand down a bit', it's right hand up a bit.
