We are being joined (heaven forbid!!) by a couple of kids (age 10-11 ish) this year for a week on the boat so I need to think life jackets. There was a product recall recently but I can't find the thread so I want to avoid that make. I obviously need something 'up to the job' but don't want to spend a fortune. I also want something that kids will wear without being 'uncool'.
Recommendations please, it's been nearly 20 years since my kids were that age, so well out of touch.

Just been through that and ended up getting an XM auto-inflate Junior size in cool yellow!! - about £50 quid. They won't want the big bulky ones (uncool) so its a auto you'll need. Most of the the manfacts seem to do them (it was Seago who had the recall BTW). When you look at the JR sizes XM seem to have the biggest of the group. Some are very small. 10-11 is at the older end of the JR auto size - think they recommend about 12ish and after go to adult. May be an idea to try for size if poss on 10-11 yr old boys who might be quite big!.... good luck.

Hi
I think I still have a couple of buoyancy aids, that my daughters used at that age, if you are interested you can have them for nothing.
They were quite "jazzy" things so they were happy to wear them.
I am based in near worcester
cheers

Thanks Nick that's really thoughtful of you. The kids are both very good swimmers so I think I'm inclined to go for the XM auto inflate as suggested by Ribster. I guess you haven't got a couple of them in the back of the garage??

Double check what it says on the lifejacket. You may find it depends on the weight of the wearer. I bought life jackets for some kids just over a year ago and I bought two the same for a couple of them thinking they were the same size. Actually one of them (aged 10) was nearly two stones lighter than the other (aged 11). The lifejackets have the min and max weight printed on them to ensure best suitability.

actually, just realised that my picture shown here shows the two boys in question! The bigger boy needed a junior auto-inflate LJ, the smaller one went for the orange padded type. they were both happy. The shop where we bought them had scales to weigh the kids to make sure the right ones were sold. Good idea I thought.

Hi Lil
I must get them on the scales and also make a prediction for August (when they are coming out to the boat) because even though the boy is younger than his sister he looks stockier.

I've noticed on the XM site that the junior is for 18-40 Kg and the adult starts at 35 Kg so they could be right on the cusp.

thanks
David
