I've had several practice sessions with the inflatable ones, 100% inflation rate.
But you should give them a once over at the start of the season ... cylinder screwed in properly, not rusty, bladder not leaking etc.
I suspect the ones that failed to inflate hadn't been checked in 10 years.

The major advantage of the inflatable one is that I'm happy to wear it most of the time, and it makes me look as if I know what I'm doing, even though that's mostly not the case

no way, when i am inside the boat, 90% of the time, what is the chances of me falling over the side ?!

For me, it's not really about falling over the side from the cockpit of an 8000kg SC35, which clearly isn't going to happen in any normal conditions.
It's more about "deck work".

Mrs FP is the deck crew, but sometimes things go a little astray.
e.g. anchor problem, picking up a mooring, stuck fender, boathook action, whatever.
So it's handy to be wearing a LJ already if I do need to leave the helm, spin inside the phone box and leap into action as deck crew MkII without having to faff around putting a LJ on.
