To meet the requirements of the Panerai regatta for classic boats I have to have a life buoy mounted ready for fast deployment. Probably a good idea in any case. I have no stanchions or guard rails on which to mount the usual standard bracket for a horseshoe. Anyone got any good ideas? I am reluctant to mount it on the aft deck, there is very little room. I have a single standing back stay and may be able to rig something using bulldog clips on the wire to hold the bracket. All suggestions gratefully received.....

Thank you
Graham

Hi Graham, we have similar problem (though not for panerai classics) We have an aft deck which is open underneath from the cockpit and I am going to fit the lifebuoy on the underside of the deck with some hooks and bungy. I can also fit the light with its bracket on the underside of the deck and as you need an additional drogue this could be fitted in the same way. Of course only if like us you have open access to under the aft deck. If not fix the whole lot to the aft cockpit bulkhead.

I did realise there were regs! Mine lies on the stern deck around the main sheet block. It stops the block hammering the deck too...

Oh and it does have a light and danbouy attached, I suppose those count as a drogue...

I was going to suggest attaching a danbuoy wherever you put it, too. The key thing is to be able to release it quickly -- maybe two large hooks clipped to the backstay, with the ring held in with velcro so that a quick upward swipe both releases and deploys it? You'd probably also want it tethered with a long length of light line in case of accidental deployment, but which can be cut within a couple of seconds if there's a man o/b.

If it's a ring and your tiller comes up though the after deck then just place it over the tiller headstock and it will lie flat on the deck, three blocks and they will stop it moving about.

I spent about £1k on complying with the regs for cowes classics week. Got to the event and nobody checked. When I queried I was told its skippers choice and responsibility. "It's not formula one , parc ferme, old chap".

I think the regs are good for me and my boat. But pragmatism is part of the sport.

We have exactly the same problem, and ended up mounting one flat on top of the hatch cover. We have the round rigid type rather that the horseshoe thing, and Force 4 sell a set of mounts (link below, though I'm sure other places would sell them too) which were quick and easy to fit and hold it perfectly well, yet it is actually very easy to lift off them should the need ever arise. It is easily accessible. We have not added any of the other parapthernalia but it would fit in the middle. We've got used to how it looks and at least it is out of the way, not obstructing line of vision, etc.
