Towards the end of last year - and after living in my town for well over 20 years - I decided to join the working mens club a few minutes walk up the road. Only a tenner a year, snooker etc, club booze prices, hot lunches Thursday to Saturday lunchtimes and a friendly welcome from Mel behind the bar.
Hadn't really got to know any of the regulars yet but last night they had a Burns Night 'bit of a do' so I offered to treat 'er indoors' - see, I know how to treat a girl :D
Haggis, neeps and tatties - oh and a BIG jug of gravy - as well as a small dram all for a fiver each. I've never eaten haggis before and was somewhat nervous about this venture well outside my comfort zone, but the food turned out to be really tasty and a live duo provided good entertainment, if a little on the loud side.
A thespianish member delivered the Speech to the Haggis with great applomb
"Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face,
Great chieftain of the sausage race!
Aboon them a' ye tak your place,
Painch, tripe, or thairm:
Weel are ye wordy of a grace
As lang's my arm."

....and I won a couple of bottles of wine in the raffle !

Always thought it was 'Chieftain of the Pudding Race'

Nowt like a pedant !

Guess that makes you a Sassenach ? :D

'Only a tenner a year'

An extra fiver or so will entitle you to visit affiliated clubs all over the country. Worth it just for the experience alone ( ! ) not to mention cheap beer.

But I think you may have to be a regular member for a year before taking advantage of this. Sadly my membership has lapsed...
