Lidl

I know the wetsuits were supplied by a manufacturer that have a well known brand name and much higher price but done a deal and supplied 50,000 "re branded" exactly the same suits just different badge.

Lidl in Greece have had sailing stuff for sale for at least a year now.... last year bought variety of shackles, ropes and lines, sailing jackets and boots, etc.... and this month they have already some really excellent lifejackets.... really upset I don't need any right now but am trying to persuade SWMBO that we should buy them to store up for the future! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The fenders are excellent for the price - I got four - and the ropes are of a very good quality. There was one woman at our store in Dumfries - first in the queue - who was disappointed because they did not seem to have received any delivery of the Inflatable Tender.

Grabbed a set of breathable oilies this morning and a few bits of rope. Oilies look good, time will tell if they really are a bargain or not.

For the money they look pretty good. I think there are different standards of"breathable". Can only try them and see.

Re: Senior Moment

Please excuse my ignorance, but who are the Lidl stores? I left England 12 years ago, and have only been back on brief visits since.
I remember seeing Aldi stores in Germany 25 years ago - stack 'em high and sell 'em cheap philosophy - I guess they have migrated across the channel?
Is Lidl a friend or foe of Aldi?

Re: Senior Moment

I suspect you are confusing the two brothers who were the owners of Aldi North and Aldi South. These are the Albrecht brothers. Lidl was started by the Swartz family, though there is an enduring myth that Lidl is run by one of the brothers

LIDL

Since opening in the UK in 1994, Lidl (www.lidl.co.uk), has opened more than 380 stores across the country. It was founded in Germany in the 1930s by a member of the Schwarz family. To avoid having to write "Black Market" over the door, since schwarz is the German word for "black", the Schwarz family bought the right to use the name Lidl from Ludwig Lidl, a retired teacher, for 1,000 German marks (now about €500).

The Lidl discount food store recognised today opened in 1973. During the Nineties, Lidl expanded across Europe and is now established in over 17 countries with 5,000 stores.

ALDI

There are 285 Aldi stores (www.aldi.co.uk) in the UK. The German discount chain started as a single small food shop in 1946, run by the brothers Karl and Theo Paul Albrecht. It now comprises 7,000 stores across Europe, the US and Australia with estimated sales of €38 billion last year. The brand name "Aldi" is an acronym derived from "Albrecht" and "discount". In 1961 the chain split into two companies (each belonging to one of the brothers) over a dispute whether to sell tobacco products at the checkout. Aldi now consists of Aldi Nord (where tobacco sales were deemed to be acceptable) and Aldi Süd (where they were not). The two firms never operate in the same countries. Aldi Süd is in the UK.

Re: Senior Moment

Bought a boat with nowt on it so needed fenders, warps, mob lights -the works. Got there Thursday in Canterbury at 7.45 having been told to beat the rush. Felt very senior standing alone with me trolley. Got sorted though -have you ever worked out the total length of warps needed -quite a shock.
