Rope on this week's specials at Lidl. 30 of approx 8mm braid for £4.99. Label indicates "Polypropylene Polyester" [sic] but I would certainly use it for sheets on a dinghy, heaving lines, fender lanyards etc. And at that price..... also have 9 x 6mm shackles for £2.99. "not suitable for climbing" etc so clearly not tested but would be OK for general use when stainless not available or needed.

and the much loved multi-tool and accessories.

not to mention a pillar drill

I noticed that, but could not think of anything I needed them for.

Oh and there were a few "kilts" left.

and guess what ....the Bosch version of the exact same item is about 50 quid and the extras kit is over 20 quid. (Lidl under 8 ) I use the Lidl mains one and also the Bosch Battery model.. give me the lidl anyday

Our local Oz national hardware chain has what I imagine is a similar 8mm or 6mm rope at crazy low prices for 30 metres. Like about 4 squid for 8mm. (from China) I of course bought both. The 6mm did not last more than a year or so in the sun at home. Tieing up an old ladder under a balcony but parts in sun.
Both sizes have a huge stretch under load. (as compared to polyester braid). They both float compared to good polyester braid whcih sinks. Definitely a good buy for what it is. I have about 20 metres of the 8mm stuffed in a sail cloth bag for use as a heaving line for MOB. We do a bit of training and it works well for that job. good luck olewill

On the subject of cheap rope, I have heard of stuff which consisted of a polypropylene braid with the inside stuffed with shredded paper. Probably Lidl's stuff isn't this bad, but it's worth checking with very cheap rope.

I had one look at them today (shackles) and Thought 'no place for being on a boat!'

The garage tool wall rack seemed a Good buy tho at £5.99 plus time installing it

I already have some of the Lidl rope and bought two more this week. I haven't fully trusted it for a halyard but it looks like it would do the job in a pinch and it's fine for a mousing line(?) when changing halyards. For £4.99 you can't go wrong.

I had some Lidl rope a while ago, looked like 8mm braid-y sorta thing. Once put under some reasonable strain, it became quite heavily mishaped, as if the inner had distorted or unravelled or something..

Usually Lidl stuff is brilliant, but I think this is more designed for washing line rather than anything sailey...

I bought a multi tool and extras pack on monday....and three lengths of rope, two thin and one thick. I passed on the shackles as nowhere did it actually say what they were made of and I already have loads of carabiner clips. The rope will have its uses and is not that bad quality wise. I renewed all my Halyards last August with proper saily kit anyway.

I needed a pillar drill about three months ago but for the small use I would put it to I can't justify one of those, so I ended up buying a drill stand from Lidl for £12-99 and putting one of my old electric drills in it. It does the job. That pillar drill is scarily cheap though isn't it. We couldn't manufacture the carboard box at that price.

I have to say the Lidl Parkside power tools are by far the best of the budget tools I come across. I havn't had a bad one yet, though my power washer has needed a few spares which has made me grumble a bit given the light use it gets.
