I have finally got around to fitting one of the cheap gas sensasors which were the subject of a thread a month or three ago.
Has anyone worked out a way to test it without actually filling the boat with gas?
Because the sensor is in the case of the detector, it isn´t easy to put it into a container with gas in it, and anyway, there would be more gas involved than I would care to spill into my bilges.

Vindaloo & 10 pints of lager

seriously, before fitting, didnt you try placing it next to the on but unlit burner for 2 seconds. worked for me

I tested mine successfully by spraying deodorant from an aerosol near the detector - nearly all aerosols now use hydrocarbons as propellant - it alarmed almost instantly, and the boat smelt lovely.
Long live Lidl!!

Instructions for these gadgets often suggest using a gas lighter to test them ... but don't do it too often because of the risk of "poisoning" the detector and rendering it less sensitive or useless.

Not if you just "waft" it over the sensor it wont . I check mine once a month . A good test is to see how far away the lighter can be held before the alarm is activated .
