Lidl battery charger

But you're not putting the full current through the charger.
I've got an earlier model and it would be ideal as a winter trickle charger except that it doesn't restart if there's a power interruption.
Might just possibly be something to do with the initial starting current being perhap 50 to 100 times greater than the charger can output and it not having an overload cutout because it's a cheap bit of kit not intended to be used in that way!

But you're not putting the full current through the charger.

But the charger will see a very low resistance across its output. Not quite a short circuit but nearly.

It may have an internal fuse or some other form of overload protection. If I killed one by doing this I'd have a look inside it and I'd darn well be sure not to do the same thing a second or third time

Exactly!

Thanks ViicS for this post, picked up the last one in our local store today. Looks a good value bit of kit. Also bought a set of the jump leads. SWMBO thought I was only getting a pint of milk :)

That's the great thing about Lidl and Aldi ... it's almost impossible to go there for boring stuff and not come back with something interesting. Not an hour ago I went to Aldi in Newton Stewart for some cold cure pills, which I got, along with a fine selection of LED light bulbs.

Cunning that, isn't it. What you (think) you save by shopping at Lidl and Aldi you spend on stuff you hadn't realised you needed to buy and probably wouldn't have bought if you hadn't gone to Lidl or Aldi to save money you ended up not actually saving after all

Hmmm!

I think it's a very cunning plan to give blokes something to look at while the women shop. OK, that's a very stereotyped view, I know, but remember that they are both German companies and KKK (Kinder / Küche / Kirche = Children / Cooking / Church) is dying slowly as a model for German women. The tradition of selling odd things in shops is strong there ... I once bought a bicycle saddle in a Tschibo coffee shop.

Help. Shifting dangerously away from boats. I have a Lidl sailing jacket, which is really good. In fact, if you took the Lidl stuff of my boat she'd float about an inch higher up. I fully expect to see small marine diesels there some time.

No, it's not absolutely necessary although the caveat is that the battery should be isolated during charging to protect both the charger and on board systems.

A small charger doesn't have the output to supply equipment as well as charge the battery and may have poor voltage regulation and / or produce potentially damaging voltage spikes

The more expensive chargers such as C-tek, Sterling etc are capable of , and are stated as being suitable for, directly supplying 12v equipment including electronics. Basic automotive chargers are not and may cause damage to sensitive equipment

The cheap charger in question does at least have a couple of basic modes. Mode 3 looks OK for sealed lead acid and gel batteries, mode 4 for AGM

At such a low output current the lack of three stage charging is not an issue :)

Thank you for that answer. The main supply is not kept permanently connected and the batteries will be switched off and all 12V circuits turned off.

As for starting the engine whilst charging, that would never happen on my boat!

Giving them a try and if they do not work, at least it has not been an expensive mistake.

Same as Sharpness, popped in to our Lidl's and bought their last one too. damn forgot the jump leads

Thanks for the heads up Vic
