Hello YBW.

I am looking for some advice.

Background - I have been on boats a number of times, I was in the sea cadets for seven years and did a lot of motor cruising not sailing. I also spent time on Navy river boats whilst I was applying to join the Navy (these were opportunities to get an idea of sea life). Also done a number of sport fishing trips whilst on holiday. So I would say I am not totally green when it comes to boating and the ocean, just the lack of full control and specific training. I am Advanced Open Water diving trained as well. I have basic navigation skills but would look at doing some courses to get more knowledge.

I have recently had the opportunity to buy a boat, My plan is to buy a Motor Trawler and travel around the Med, North Africa, and maybe further afield. I am wondering if anyone can give me some information on what courses or licenses I would require for my plans.

Thanks

If you’re just talking of ticking boxes, you will only need an ICC. Few hundred pounds of training will get it. However, if you’re talking about personal skill, get all the training and do all the courses you can. Start thinking about insurance requirements for them to cover you to operate a 55’ boat in open water. Don’t forget also the 90/180 rule for Brits in Europe. Good luck

Thanks will have a look into it, yeh not really looked at insurance requirements, just trying to find decent insurers.

You recently had an opportunity to buy a boat ! Are you one lucky feller 👍

When I say recently it has taken me a good number of years of sacrifice to get to this point.
This organisation manages power boa courses, they are delivered through recognised training centres: -

RYA Powerboat Training | Courses for beginners and professionals
I had a look, was just confused whether to do power boat or motor cruising or are they technically the same.

PB1&2 are meant for small vessels but many of the skills learnt are common with the motor cruising day skipper etc. As you're aiming at owning a large motorboat the motor cruising courses are probably more suited, although an argument could be made for doing one or more of the PB courses as you're likely to have a small RHIB or inflatable as a tender.

Indeed the RYA could make their training schemes easier to understand. What penfold in post 6 states is relevant.

I would recommend that you straight to the horses mouth and talk to a sea school. These company is near me and the instructor teaches Police that man the police boats which protect our nuclear fleet. He has good reputation: -

Powerboat Level 2

Worth a call and he will give you the information that you need. The RYA also do navigation courses.

Depends where you get the boat from....if you get a boat in Britain and sail her to the Med, then it’s as everyone says ICC. But if you buy a boat that’s already in the Med it will depend on which country. For example you could go to an English school in France, make a holiday of it and get Permis Côtier and Extension Hauturière....it will cost a few hundred
