Licata

It just amazing how a night crossing can help you decided on some thing we been ponding on for a while , Raguse , Licata , Raguse ,Licata .
three part of the way over to Elba we decided , Licata it going to be , we fancy a change from Ragusa plus it 200 Euros cheaper and easier to come and go as we please .

We have to sort out lift out on Malta or go over to Tunisia early spring next year .

Now it just a matter of another 400 plus mile , and a quick visit to Malta before we can put our feet up and meet new friends

We are in the Aolean Isles probably heading back to Sicily today and like you we are trying to decide which one. We will sail down and visit both before deciding but if anyone is there and can give us an update that would be good... thanks for the quick summary of Licate Sam

In Licata, just 10 minutes walk from the marina there's a restaurant called IlMolino. Recommended by marina staff and was the most amazing pizza I've ever eaten for just 4.50 euro :) packed with local people, a definite must!

Don't think they have any activities like the ones we were told about in Ragusa, feel sure the winter crowd can all get together and organise things. They couldn't have been more helpful, drove me and dog to the vets for his necessary pre Malta treatment. Took us to get fuel (if over a certain amount they get a fuel truck in). The laundrette wasn't finished, didn't ask when it would be but guess that may be an issue for some. The shower blocks are really good, funny how the luxury of showering in a bigger space appeals after the summer months cruising - yep, I'm sad!!

If anyone was interested in the languages classes they offer, well they won't be doing that until there's a sufficient number. Minimum of 8 people, hope that happens as going private will be costly.

I was in Licata past August for three days, and the yard of the marina is not yet completed, and operational. Even the marina is still a scratch to what it will become (massive).

Apart from this I must admit the marina gave us a very good service, and I loved the place. Would definitely be going back again.

In Licata Western part of the harbour there is three or more other yards and may be you should try contact one of them. If no reply I would try Ragusa, which is only 35 nm away.

We was thinking about having two months in Malta two in Raguse and two in Licata , but Ragusa wanted 550 Euros a month and Licata 350 a months that was going to work out too expenses , it would be cheaper to book int Licata and if we want to spend some time in Malta then we just anchor like we would do ,

SAM , did they charge you in Malta to check the dog in ? I hear they do now , the last time we was over there if was free for both our dog and cat ?

The treatment cost 10 euro, vet is located near the hospital in Licata. (Studio Vetinario Blasi Stefania). Marina staff will happily take you there, it's an open clinic but if you explain when making the booking that its just for the tablet you should go in before consultations begin.

Officially yes, you should contact authorities here and someone will visit to check pets in and charge you. Unofficialy no one bothers (that's from our friend whose mooring we are using, he took the papers for us). We will also be dividing our time between Malta and Sicily :)

If you only need lift out for a week or so then Crotone is THE place, really helpful, clean tidy, toilets, showers, washing machine etc oh yes and cheap.

We met five lives boards today and all seem to be waiting for October (looks like non sailing weather on 1st)
Four are going to Ragusa and one licarter.
I asked reasons and it seems to come down to social activities
We still keep changing our minds between the two but at the moment ragged is just forging ahead

Met people today on the water taxi in Malta who have wintered in both places over the past 2 years. For organised social activities with daily radio call etc definitely Ragusa! They quoted it as being a very cosy ex-pat community.

They quoted it as being a very cosy ex-pat community.
And Licata, being a slightly larger town, less dependent on tourism, brings a more lively Sicilian culture to the winter experience . . .

Cruising folk are a broad church. Some huddle together over winter with like minded people.

And some seek fresh cultural experiences, outside their comfort zone.

Do you know the website address for liveaboards in Ragusa. Apparently they have sent out a message detailing some organised activities for next month,

Don't have that address but do know (from a mutual friend) that Friday evening is the weekly marina get together night to meet and discuss weekly events, ladies shopping trips, excursions etc.

Updates from Trapani thread

The marina's ok, a few teething troubles; like 2 of the power/water towers on L2 are broken so the marinero pulled out one boats plug to let us plug in - as the place gets fuller this will be a problem. Given that we pay for power/water which is controlled by loading a proximity (probably RFID) 'badge', do I lose my credit if someone unplugs me? Its well protected, a strong southerly might get some swell in but theres a dog leg of new breakwaters to try and keep it out. The spacing between pontoons is huge, even on the Rival I have no concerns about backing off the berth :) The on-site laundry opened a few days ago but seems to need a little bedding in...

Thought I'd try to bring the discussion about Licata back into this Licata thread (mostly for the benefit of anyone subsequently searching the forum for Licata info). So, some updates on the above from the Trapani thread....

The power/water towers have been fixed after some power maintenance yesterday, I also discover that its possible to transfer funds from one outlet to another by putting them back on ones dongle thing. SWMBO has been using the laundry and reports no concerns other than having to kick the door of the washer shut, it says push hard! The town itself is fascinating, lots of little streets, shops, cafes, restaurants, workshops etc. Theres a decent supermarket just outside the marina and another a 10 minute bike ride away, along with a brico and decent electrical/electronic goods store.

Vic, the yard uses a crane to put the boat on a moving cradle so you have to do the backstay thing for the crane. The yard is a well established business thats been serving the port for 20 years or so, they are gearing up to meet demands of yachties with the advent of the new marina. There also seem to be the usual trades onsite - stainless and canvas at least.

Hi Robbie
Not been here 24 hours yet but what we seen so far is good I think we made the right chose coming here then going back to Ragusa ,
We just moved this morning to be with the rest of the rif raf ,may even be on the same pontoon as your self ,
I will have to have a word with the yard but the price they email me was too much for just a lift out .

Only one problem, the super market ! It so well stocked up with so much food I can see we will be spending a fortune there .
