We plan an 'epic trip' next year from Cagliari all the way to 'somewhere in Sicily' . We understand there is still an ongoing debate about the best marina for long term stays (not quite live aboards!!). Is there a consensus yet?
and can anyone advise on the approximate rates ( 10m mono) ?
Many thanks

It seen that what your looking for is a marina to leave the boat over winter , as you said ( not quite a liveBoard ) for me it has to be Ragusa , my reason , the fouling in Licata . Yes there is a diver that will clean the bottom for ( 100 /150) but do you want layers and layers of fouling hanging off your gel all winter , ( you may be lucky ) BUT don't expect to be able to drive out of the marina if your boat it standing in the water thought the winter in Licata . For every one person who says they didn't have a problem I can assure you there ten that did.
The haul out is very costly in both Licata and Ragusa .
The only other big different in both marinas is , Licata is a quite a big town where Ragusa is smaller but for every day living you can buy just as well in Ragusa .
As they say pay you money and take you chance
Good luck with where every you decide to stay , Sicily lovely and so are the people .

I wouldnt disgaree with Vic, but we've chosen to return to Licata for the second year...
Licata is much the bigger town and you can find most things somewhere with walking distance. If you're going to fly back to UK; the easiest airport for Ragusa is Comiso, for Licata its Catania. For us Gatwick is the easiest UK destination so Catania is our preferred airport, 6-8 buses daily direct (and the marineros will drop you at the bus station).

On deals, why not contact the marinas direct - both speak good english and are usually prompt to reply.

Thanks guys just trawled through all the past comments about these 2 marinas on various threads.
As advised I contacted both marinas re prices for 12 months in 2015
2480 euros in Licata and 3230 in Ragusa for our 10m mono; quite a difference!
Comments about the berth spacing were interesting as our long keeler is not the best in close quarter manouvering!
I also note the comments about fouling in Licata though another comment suggests that Ragusa was little better.
The cost of lift out ( and back I hope?) of 1000 euros seemed a bit steep. Has anyone cost info about getting the antifouling done? coppercoat and diver cleaning would seem to be cost effective given the lift out price.
currently Licata is winning our vote at this time!

Grandma McBaerselman has an authentic ring to it :)
Cheeky feller!

Mother's mother. She married an English tailor in Leicester. Spent many a wartime night with her listening to the Lancasters gathering overhead en route for their thousand bomber raids. I knew the sound of Merlins, but didn't know a thing about what was going on until a decade later.

Both have enough space to manoeuver, but Licata has stacks of space to do so. My neighbors are both about a meter away from us but not all berths are like this ....you takes what you get. But they try hard to accommodate you

Would be very interested in learning more about how this works out for you so please keep posting whatever you discover ('cos I'm lazy and it will save me a lot of research). We're berthed in Barcelona at the moment but looking to move next year.
Good luck.

We've left our boat in Port Olympic http://www.portolimpic.es/ for a few years now (fly home, work a bit, fly back) but time to move on even though Barca is a great place.
We quite fancy Sicily for a while - there's nothing like the smell of fire and brimstone from an active volcano to clear the tubes.

Port Vell still busy chucking out lots of "little boats" in order to clear the way for super yacht berths.

Have any Super Yachts moved in?

There's always a turnover of super yachts in Port Vell but the new berths they've been building over the past couple of years were, as yet, unfinished when I was there a couple of months ago. That said, they most certainly have cleared out a big patch from where once us "little boats" bobbed up and down. I'm back in Barca next week so I'll report on progress.

Anyway, back to the real subject of this thread, any more news on Licata or Ragusa? Do we know if its 1000 Euros each way or for a lift or is that for both ways? Has anyone sailed over from there to Tunisia to get work done? Questions, Questions!

We was there last winter , when we first asked about a lift out in July knowing that we would be staying there in the winter we was told it would be about 1400 euros for a lift in and out and two coats of antifouling , we didn't need anitfoulding as we are coppercoated , over the winter a bunch of yacht with the involvement of the marina management ask the yard for a price for a group lift out , it was then reported ( I didn't go to the meeting ) it was going to be about 1O00 / 1200 one English guy next to our berth said he got a price from the same yard for 600 Euros , which I don't believe for one moment ( he never did get lifted out ) I personal ask the yard just before we left for Turnisa for a price just for a lift in and out and a wash , the best he said he would do was what he offered everyone else .

Tunisa is a very different story , no problem checkIng in or out , every one friendly , fuel was 55c a litre , lifting and out was for us around 160 euros wash 30 euros then something like 4 euros a day standing . they would anitfoul for some kind of silly money and polish the boat if you want them but you have to stand over them .
Hope it helps

We had experience of both marinas last winter. Your information is incorrect, the fouling in Licata is severe and in Ragusa negligible. There is a good reason for this, Licata is close to a river bring nutrients down (helped by the adjoining, sometimes smelly sewage plant so its yummy time for the shellfish. Ragusa has fresh water springs within the marina which reduces the salinity of the water considerably and therefore the shellfish have a fairly lean time

This is our second year in Ragusa. The reason is the first years was so good. Interestingly about 80% of the people who were here last year are back which says quiet a lot.
I cannot comment on Licata

Our first year in Ragusa, but have to give praise to the liveaboard community here. Plenty of people about and a real sense of the marina being a small "town". If you're planning on staying aboard, then Ragusa can't be faulted. The town itself has various supermarkets, so daily requirements are well catered for. For more specialist stuff, Ragusa town itself is not too far and has a couple of shopping centres.

However, I was chatting to a French couple who passed through here last week. If you're looking to be put ashore for the winter, then Licata works out noticeably cheaper.
