LIBS and the Boat, Caravan & Outdoors Show

The NEC would have to enlarge some of their access doors to get the real big stuff in, the Sunseeker that was in there this year was taken apart and rebuilt, along with the access door!

As I said in my earlier post we support both shows (as does the BMF) before I get shot down in flames !
 
Totally agree with Strathglass post, I also live in Scotland and getting to Bitmingham is not easy by Public transport whereas london is, I do not like the idea of mixing up the show themes, I subcribe to the one big show that specialises in one subject, when everyone can attend, and its Southampton for me...

It's on the Rhine, but i'm not sure if they bring any boats in that way?
 
Yup, Dusseldorf is on the Rhine and a few boats do arrive by water but AFAIK they still have to be lifted and trucked to the exhibition centre. Most boats though arrive by truck because it's easier and more reliable
 
Indeed. Another problem is this: If you live in North West, North East, or Birmingham area (south of) there is a direct rail link that will connect you quickly with London, and then tube / DLR (or even Riverboat) that takes you to door of Excel.

If you live South or East (or even West as far as Reading) of London, in order to get to Birmingham, you have to go through London or round the M25.

The fact remains that it is more awkward for more people to get to NEC than it is for a smaller number of people to get to LIBS.

Eh? To get to Excel by road from most of the South East involves navigating a large proportion of the M25, possibly queuing at the Dartford crossing and then crawling through E London. It's 100% motorway to the NEC and the M40 to Birmingham is one of the fastest motorways in the UK. In addition, if you want to use public transport, there are many direct trains to Birmingham International
No way you can argue that the NEC is less accessible than Excel unless you live in Essex of course
 
Wrong again!! You really must get out more & somehow get rid of this Londoncentric obsession of yours. If the current population of Great Britain is 60 million & 20 million live in London & within reasonable commuting distance of London, then for 40 million of the population, getting to London is not easy.

From Dartford it is 2 or 3 lane dual carriageway all the way to Excel. No crawling through East London. So in reality it is also motorway all the way barring the lower speed limit

Dartford is south of the river and Excel is north so you still have to cross the river somewhere. As for that dual carriageway, try leaving Excel at 6.00pm on a weekday and getting onto the M25
 
Isn't the boat show location just about simple economics? Excel = close to the City. City = people with money. People with money = people likely to buy new boats. People likely to buy new boats = boat show. Ergo ... Excel = boat show.

Although it's an easy drive for us (Brighton) I'm really not a fan of Excel, but I do understand why it is where it is. I'm not convinced that boat shows is the way of attracting younger people to boating either - for me, it was being on the beach as a kid and seeing all the speedboats.

With respect, how patronising a comment is your latest post? Believe it or not, there are people outside of 'the City' who have both money & aspirations. You know, I'm convinced that, earlier this year, I even saw a brand new mobo or two on waters in the north of England!! I'm sure that sounds unbelivable to some of you, but I can assure you I am telling the truth.
 
I said that to an exhibitor last year who was selling flash Italian mobos and he said that they hadn't seen a particular influx of city slickers since the move to Excel. According to him, anyone with real money tended to do their boat shopping at the Cannes or Monaco shows
Anyway there's nobody left with any money in the City this year so they might as well move it to the NEC /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

And I wonder where they were bought? LBS, no doubt !!!!!

Well, for those of us who can manage the journey, lets see what LBS has to offer in 2009. I m going along to enjoy myself, and not to fuss about its location.

Done it many many times, In fact do it every day including later today. No worse than leaving the NEC at 6pm.

I know that Dartford is South of the Thames, but my point still stands. It's all big roads all the way to Excel.

Nope, if you come from west or north of London, you will come down the M11 to Excel and then get snarled up in smaller roads. As for coming from central London, don't even think about it. There's no way you can argue Excel is more accessible than the NEC for the majority either by car or rail. I've done both many times and even though I live closer to Excel in terms of distance, the NEC is overall easier to get to
 
Nope from the north its M11, A406, A13 so still all big roads.

Please also accept that I have never said either is easier to get to than the other. I am just pointing out some facts relating to the journey to Excel.
 
Calm down boys. I'm not really Londoncentric. I have family members living in Bristol, Wirral, Huntingdon and ...erm.. Essex where I'm from /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif although I now live in Croydon. The point is that, as pointed out above, there are actually decent roads into London which are'nt too bad from certain directions. From other places you would use train / bus etc.

I'm just trying to point out the sound economic and logistical reasons for having the show in Excel as opposed to NEC. And I can't be completely wrong, or they would have moved the show to NEC by now. If they genuinely thought that they would sell more boats / make more money by having the show in Brum, they would do it, wouldn't they?
 
Yeah, but nobody drives into South London from the South East if they can avoid it. From anywhere between Croydon down to Brighton and around East towards Dartford you would take a train into London Bridge then 10 mins walk to Tower Bridge DLR then on to Custom House for Excel.

I read somewhere that there are more millionaires in the Wilmslow, Alderley Edge, Prestbury triangle of Cheshire than anywhere else, outside the posh bit of London.
