Sunday 2nd May - Hamble entrance - a stinkie calls a mayday. Uses totally incorrect procedure and does not know position, when CG tries to assertain the information......long periods of silence on VHF. Turns out he had engine failure. Calm water, very little tide running, fine weather conditions, engine failure, near sheltered waters, not in a busy shipping lane, no risk of collision.................mayday I think not. He had children on board, but even so he would have just drifted onto the mud, or he could have dropped the hook, and assertained the problem. None of them had lifejackets on. What business do people have putting to sea who are obviously clueless??

Well it rather depends on where he was exactly and which way the wind was blowing but if he was being blown into Southampton Water and maybe his anchor was'nt holding and there was the QM2 steaming up the fairway, I might be tempted to believe there was imminent danger to the boat and it's crew but probably a Pan Pan would have been more appropriate in the circumstances
I take it you didnt rush to his aid then?

Sorry,

Its a call of the skipper. either way he was going to call the CG. So, he was frightened and made the wrong call, but I am sure the CG would rather have the call before it warranted a full blown rescue. Having been at sea with no power its is easy to panic.

Agree about Liftjackets, especially kids

Cant see it matters whatever he said. He dont want to spend the rest of his life on the mud bank does he. Think I might have just had a quiet word with CG on 67 and ask if any one passing could just pop by. But then thats not in the rule book either, is it.
Main thing is, he garbled something down the radio before it started to rain and the butties got wet. Lifeboat crews only meet folks that feel a bit foolish or corpses. Nowt much in between.

I find your comments amazing!

A previous post referred to the conditions and situation which were valid. Another post states that "it's the skippers call".

There is a severe lack of understanding of what is a May Day call and what is a Pan Pan. More inportantly had the "Skipper" called the coast guard and said his engine had failed they would have asked him to stand by on 67 for their call and he would have been able to discuss the situation with them calmly. They would have have probably asked on 16 for anyone in the area who could do a tow.

A May day call involves all vessels in the proximity of the calling station and creates an immediate emergency situation. Nobody should be in command of vessel, especially if there are children on board, without the necessary practical training and experience to handle situations of this kind.
There is a real underestimation of the what skill or training is required in these circumstances and more and more people are getting afloat.

Regards.

Peter.

The word tw** comes to mind. However I will not use it as kim gets upset. Every one on the sea is not necesarily as expert as you. They just needed help. Asking for help in whatever method is not a crime. Now I would have probably hung around for a day or two waiting for a friendly boat to pass by. If it was you I'd have FKD you off and waited for some more kindly sod to pass by...../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

If the skipper of the boat felt they were in imminent danger, regardless of whether you thought so then Mayday correct call.
The fact is when things go wrong, not everyone can stay calm , and I'm sure the CG would rather have you put in a Mayday that they may end up downgrading than pick up corpses.

I stand by my comment its the skippers call.

IF HE THOUGHT HE WAS IN DANGER. HE MADE THE RIGHT CALL.

However, I am sure the CG would have discussed his situation and if required calmed down his fears and acted correctly.
