We have a nice pair of Lewmar 52 self tailing winches and we use sheets of 16mm.
As I am not a fan of big sheets I replaced them into 14mm, but they slip.
Is there a way to change the thickness of the selftailing part so we can used thinner sheets?

Any experiences?

I believe each winch size is designed around the expected rope sizes for its application. There is a lot of good information in the support section of the Lewmar website - you can download the service manual there.

I find with the 30ST, I have to be pretty careful to add an extra turn on the drum and give a good hard jerk to jam it in the top. Your new lines may still be a bit slippy and could improve with use.

Rob.

Edit: the 50ST and 54ST are the current models and both claim to handle lines of 8-16mm. Is the rope slipping on the drum or in the teeth of the gripper - or both, I guess?

Thanks, The are slipping on the teeth of the gripper. Will check the site.

washers beneath circular jaws..

The original design patent for Barlow/Barient self tailers provided a circular washer(s) beneath the circular rope holding teeth, this was either plastic for some models, or stainless steel for others. Removing these will decrease separation of the holding rings.....

How many turns are you loading the winch with before you put the line over the stripper and into the wave-grip or whatever Lewmar call their self tailing bits? The self tailing bit shouldn't be taking any load on the line at all - the load should come onto the drum via the turns.

Try more turns on the drum?

The old Lewmars have a "Fixed" spacer the newer ones have sprung loaded jaws
